After the long 12hour flight from Jo'burg, I land in Perth, the most western city in Australia. People here like to say it's the most isolated city on earth, being days away from the nearest city of comparable size in Australia, and being several hours away by plane from other continents. When I get picked up from the airport by my hostel it is a sunny gorgeous day, and thankfully, not too hot. Alas, summer has just begun, and I am in for some scorching days ahead. Having honed my heat index ...
Perth and its beaches, Australia charmedlifeHaving totally blown our budget in Melbourne over Christmas and New Year we decided it was time to economise in Perth and get the budget back on track. It has been like being a student again - trying to find anything you can do for free and searching out the cheapest places to eat and drink! Our hostel was really lovely - the Coolibah Lodge - unfortunate name - Matt has been singing Waltzing Maltida none stop for the past week! It had three large kitchens so for the first time since we left t...
Perth, Australia mattandlouI have a confession to make - I have not been able to sit down and write properly since I left Singapore. More than suffering from writer's (?!) block, I have been unable to sit down at a computer for a long time, or better: I've always found a reason not to do so. Must have been a form of computer allergy after a long year in front of the desktop? Hence the next challenge: trying to describe the travelling I've done in the last 30 days or so in just a few entries! I apologise in advance if t...

On Sunday we met Carole’s friend Joan and her husband Alan. They live in one of thoe lifestyle apartments – nice way of saying retirement apartment. The apartments were gorgeous and the amenities included in the whole area were fantastic, cinema, clubhouse, swimming pool, gym, restaurant, crafts, bowling green and all sorts of other things. We went with them to ...
... between 18/11/09 and 18/02/10. Great!!! I pointed out to the woman that I dont get to China til 11/03/10, which is clearly stated on the application form. They had to check the form and said to come back in Feb and they refunded my money. They wouldnt give back the form so I will have to fill out a new one but at least I got the photo back. I was hoping to get the visa early so I could start getting other things organised but this will not happen now and will be a mad panic in Feb.
Perth, Western Australia, Australia dzasta... pearl and said he could change it over in an hour, so we went off for some lunch and also continued our search for our other elusive item, a backpack for son Tim. We eventually were successful with that too, so went back and picked up the pendant (after a bit of a run-around finding the shop a second time!).
We had used very little of the stored value on our monorail cards - basically we had used up the free RM4 each then just a couple more ringgits - so we went to ...
... the damn turtle than the sharks! The spotter planes radioed through that they had located a whale shark, so we moved off in that direction, prepared for the dive & when the signal was given, all entered the water. The boat was positioned directly in front of the shark & when we entered the water, our group of 10 split in half for the shark to swim through the middle of us, while we swam along him either side. We were able to get within about 2-3m of the three ...
Perth, Western Australia, Australia dixie87Today is Good Friday, so I have the fish all ready to cook for tea (well actually it's Alisons turn, so she is cooking the barramundi for tea tonight). Its a beautiful warm day in Perth (about 32) we are just spending the last few days here over Easter, then we finally head north up the West Coast. Geoffrey has itchy feet, ready to move on. On ...
Perth, Western Australia, Australia ellislynn... and I nearly choked when she casually stated it was $43 for the night! It didn't have anywhere to swim unlike at Guilderton and was only $1 cheaper. Greg and I muttered to ourselves angrily as we set up the van, we ought to ring ahead and discover prices in future. Later that day as we took in our surroundings, completed yet more washing and relaxed a little. The kids and Greg came back to the van bearing gifts from the caretaker, a ...
