After the wilds of the west coast, Christchurch is a taste of civilisation. Often said to be the most English of New Zealand cities, you could be in Oxford with the punts gliding down the sun drenched river. The centre of town is dominated by the Cathedral Square and a long street (Worcester) running down to the grand botanical gardens. After breakfast at a local cafe, I wander down through the through the square. The World Buskers Festival is annually held in January, and a number of groups ...
Auckland, New Zealand bastin79Mon 26th May - Today we hitched to Auckland, which took most of the day! We ended up with 4 rides, the last being a really nice businessman going to Auckland for meetings. He drove us 80% of the way and was a great guy! When we got to Auckland all the hostels we wanted were booked up so we are staying in some ****** hovel but with some really nice girls from England! We went out for dinner for fear of food poisoning if we cooked at the hostel. Delightful! Tues 27th May- This morning we went o...
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand edandaliAnother country after another flight. The flight had a two hour delay because of the storms in New Zealand, after a late start we we're finally off towards the Kiwi's. Because of the delay i couldn't get the cheaper shuttlebus anymore so i took the supershuttlebus which runs 24 hours a day and is still slightly cheaper then the taxi's. Finally arrived at the hostel and then the next unfortunate thing happend. The hostel's reception was open till ten o'clock and it was already one o'clock in t...

... in the city. Have a look at the website! Its pretty amazing to get a job there and I will just be teaching physics and I get to do some A level stuff which is great news. I still can't quite believe it to be honest. The only snag is that I don't start until term 1 which is 26th January so a few months of no money and feeling generally useless because Charlotte is working and I'm not! It will be worth it though.

Finally we have finally ...
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand nadjabasti... grand - like water with seaweed and the odd piece of barley. The english guys and new irish girl - Orla - were at the table in the kitchen along with an irish girl who worked at the hostel (who has been on the road for 5 years). I bought some beers and joined them. Before we knew it we were playing drinking games and saying silly stuff. We went for more beers and then over to the bar by which stage we'd been joined by Chico from Spain whose last permanent home ...
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand codownsean... to stop at and take pictures of so it breaks up the time on the road. Plus New Zealand isn't that big of a country to begin with. Just after the volcanic crater we stopped at Cathedral Cove and went on a 45 minute walk through the jungle to arrive at this beautiful beach. There were all of these large rocks sticking up from the water and a sort of tunnel/ cove had been created out of rock along the beach. This was my first taste of the natural landscape and it was pretty exciting ...
Auckland, New Zealand bethpelletier... caves - first stopping at one of the hundreds of volcanic hilltops which Auckland is built upon for some fab early morning views over the city. I find it incredible that this huge city with a population larger than the entire south island is sat upon so many volcanoes!! On to the Waitomos spellbound Glow worm caves - these were amazzzing. This is the only place in the world with conditions where the glow worms can survive - the miniscule glowworms have hundres of tiny ...
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand nixandliz... headset Harry, a couple of machines across going for it for all his worth, with the headset on the bridge of his nose and the treadmill going at a fair rate of knots (faster than mine anyway.) But it's going so fast he can't keep up and he's slowly and irrevocably being propelled towards the end of the treadmill, with his arms at full stretch and holding onto the bar, and has to literally haul himself back up closer to the bar or be ...
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand easygeeze... full circuit to get an overview of the city before exploring on our own, however the last stop but one was at the 'Sky Tower' a wonderful vantage point to get an overview of the whole city. Having disembarked the bus and purchased the tickets to the Sky Tower we entered the elevator which took us to the 54th floor - this was fine until the concrete block work of the elevator shaft gave way to glass so that those who had the nerve could ...
