820 Boat Harbour Drive Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia, 4655
Firstly apologies for not updating the blog for so long but we were having to much fun and there wasn't anywhere to access the internet easily.
This morning we were up early to ready for a 8am pick up, so we had to check-in and out of our accommodation as they only left a key outside the reception as we arrived so late the night before. We threw our bags on the trailer and got comfy on the bus that took us to the pier where we hoped onto our catamaran that was waiting to take us across t...
hi everyone! for the past three days i've been in the lovely little seaside town of Hervey Bay (pronounced HAR-vee Bay). i came up here to pursue the possibility of getting work on a few of the whale watching boats that are based here. if you read anything about Hervey Bay you'll most likely read how proud they are to call themselves the whale watching capital of Australia, perhaps even the world. the Southern Hemisphere humpback population migrates every year in May or June, leaving the cold...
Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia katelinHervey Bay I arrived in Hervey Bay and found the beaches to be quite beautiful. I'd been to Hervey Bay before, many years ago, when we bought a group of school kids up here to go to Fraser Island for school camp. It was as I remembered, although much more developed for tourists now. Because I'd done a tour of the island before, I opted to spend a day walking the beach and the 1000m jetty. The tidal movement in the area is significant and on that day, large sandbars had appeared which were hom...

... get stuck like most the other groups! Lake mckenzie had flour white sand and gorgeous water. Swam accross the lake and ran back before we left. Rough ride back down to the beach, then we saw whales offshore on the drive to the campsite! Set up camp and made dinner with a super efficient crew. Had some drinks and chased away dingoes before some good chatting with the crew. A shooting star before bed!
So a minor panic when we were placed on the pan-European 4WD where we had 4 frenchies, 2 belgians and a sole dutchman, everyone spoke rapid french and we just smiled and nodded!.
Anyhow, after a spot of supermarket sweep (30 mins for me and Jo to spend 180 bucks on food for everyone), we loaded the bus up and set off on the journey...we went with 2 other cars so we all got along pretty well. Landed on the island and all cars immendialty got stuck on ...
... able to see them up really close; they were bigger than the boat (12m long and 40 tonnes). We also saw dolphins swimming with the boat and jumping and a scary looking sea snake. We’ve put a selection of photos on and Rachel will try and upload her videos too.
In the evening, we met with Rachel’s mum’s friend Ros and her husband Jon who drove us to the Boat Club for dinner and drinks which was nice but we couldn’t stay long as we had to get the overnight bus to Airlie Beach.
... down the beach - Pete and Pat. Yes, we had managed to set up camp adjacent to nudist retirees...and they weren't shy about it. Thankfully, they frocked up when they came over to inspect our camp and share Pete's travel advice and handy tips and dress advice.
The most amazing thing about Fraser at this time of year is of course, the whales. We were completely ...
... of wacky races start as the vehicles charge off the boat and down the first straight sand track all aiming to be first at Lake Mackenzie. Being positioned quite near the front we got a good start and with some excellent 4 wheel driving in the sand by yours truly we managed to overtake the vehicles in front of us and skid and slide our way through the deep sand tracks to lake Mackenzie.
As the trees opened out you are rewarded with your first awe inspiring view ...
... supermarket. Now me … I can eat just about anything with the exception of certain sea foods ie ones with heads and shells. Shelley is slightly more fussy and doesn’t eat many vegatables or salads. But the two girls Jo and Kelly where in a league of there own! Before we had even left the safety meeting they had already told us that they don’t like sharing there own food with people! Add that Kelly was wheat intolerant and had to have special bread and types ...
