    Big and functional

I stayed in quite a nice room with single beds and just two other people. A nice change from crappy bunks in many other hostels. I can't really say any more than that. I barely stayed one night, having to get up at 3.30am to go to the airport.

Excellent backpacker accommodation here in Christchurch.

Excellent backpacker accommodation here in Christchurch. Well run with plenty of facilities and even it's own restaurant with full menu. If you prefer you can always cook your own in there well equipped kitchen. Plenty of bathrooms to wash up and lounge areas to sit and relax or watch a bit of TV. Very clean and comfortable for young and old alike.

the long and short of it is: good for one night and one night only. the place just has a depressing feel about it. its a huge hostel that's really dingey and dated and in need of investment. the kitchen was pretty much unusable...apparently a new one was going to be fitted. overpriced.

Great location, but would probably stay somewhere else next time

The best thing about this place is probably the location. After the earthquake destroyed much of the city centre (including centrally located backpackers), this is probably the best choice if you want to stay close to the city centre. The rooms and bathrooms were clean, though the rooms were very basic and could have more power plugs (in a 10-bed-room there were only 6 power plugs, and none at all in the bathrooms). A Robert Harris Café is attached to the hostel for breaky or morning coffee (including 30 minutes of free wifi!!). I found the hostel's atmosphere rather anonymous and not that inviting, so I hung out mostly in the botanic gardens next door. There's not much to see in Christchurch after the earthquake. The city centre (red zone) is completely closed up.

this hostel needs serious renovations - the kitchen is tiny and very ill-equipped, the tv rooms are old and run down with old tv sets, the rooms remind me of a hospital. the decor is faded and dull. the staff were unhelpful. generally unclean place. i would definitely NOT recommend staying here.

I was only in Christchurch for an afternoon and evening, before getting up in the early hours to catch a flight. I went with Lydia from the bus to Quake City (museum about the 2010 & 2011 earthquakes), Canterbury Museum and Botanical Gardens. Then on to Astro Lounge for tea and then dinner. Apparently the insurance companies are holding up the …

After a few days in Wellington we finally arrived at the South Island 4 days ago. Because of the bad wheater in Wellington we were really looking forward to get out of it. The ferry shuttle was very relaxing and suprisingly luxurious. Well, we also paid enough for it but ok. The first night at the South Island, we spent in a great little Lodge with …

    23.03.15 Lake Tekapo - Christchurch

    A City in Ruins

A travel blog entry by tholdsworth89 on Oct 07, 2014

All good things have to come to an end. We woke up in Queenstown for the last time (during this trip at least) on the Friday morning and said our goodbyes to a few of the others who were staying put. Most memorable of all that morning was the appearance of an item of clothing that had been kept under wraps for a whole month, only to emerge at the …

We left Lake Tekapo in the sleety snow at about half 8 this morning. We couldn't eat our porridge as we had no sugar to go with it and lets face it you can't eat bare porridge. We got on the bus with all seven other people and left for Christchurch. After half an hour or so we said goodbye to the majestic mountains as we entered the plains of …
