Alice in the land of the Hominidae

A 10 hour flight, followed by a ten hour sleep in Johannesburg led me to land in Namibia. I've been here a week now and most of it has been so surreal I don't know how I'm going to put it into words. Like drinking in Joe's Bar in Windhoek with an old guy with a mullet escaping his tax payments in South Africa and a young guy from Botswana who had the 'smartest' English accent I've heard. Then I went on tour with 5 others (Leslie (American), Uta (Germ), Shane and Sarah (Aus) and Peter (also a ...

Getting here and bloody cell phone

This first paragraph is more about the details of getting here, then some of the trials and tribulations of getting my @$%^ing cell phone to work out here, and then I think I'll launch into some deeper stuff - why do some people love to travel, what is about doing this that so totally fills your bucket. Maybe I'll make this later bit a separate entry?
So the details: The flight from Atlanta on Thursday was direct into Johannesberg and I found out was just the 4th time Delta had flown this...

Foiling burglars and hiring cars

The nice Namibian not only gave us a FREE (!!) ride all the way to Windhoek and fed us en route, but also, unbeknown to us, arranged for us to stay with his unmarried-but-looking-hard brother-in-law! We arrived in at Joggie's apartment in the suburbs of Windhoek not quite sure what we were in for. Joggie was lovely. A little podgy, hard-of-hearing, and a little awkward with girls, but a lovely and most accomodating host with a lovely wee house with loads of security - does one really need bar...

Windhoek, the quite capital

On this trip my husbands parents traveled with us for 3 weeks... Dieter and I have been in Nabmibia once before in 2004 and we are excited going back. Namibia is a country of many diversities. The magic nature changes often and the beautiful people is a mirror of their surroundings.

Need a little bit of adventure...

Sorry to the people who were a little worried that I hadn't updated my blog recently but I've taken an unexpected detour and as you will see Internet is not an option. Yvette left this morning and honestly I think it was good timing as I was starting to feel a little tied down because of her. There were some things that I just wasn't into that she wanted to do (ie. shopping) and she was too afraid to do them alone so made me feel guilty. Luckily Anthony was happy to accompany her and after th...

Arrival in Windhoek and Raleigh staff training

My flight from Auckland to Windhoek takes 35 hours. It really doesn't look that far on the map. I hop, skip and jump from Auckland to Kuala Lumpur to Johannesburg and finally to Windhoek. I have a raging bout of flu and feel completely rubbish. Those round the world tickets have a lot to answer for. I arrive at the super duper Chameleon hostel in the centre of Windhoek. It has a pool and lots of chilling-out areas. I am in a dorm room for the first night. Nicola is clearly a male name in thes...

Townships, Termite Mounds and Cheetah Poo

The plane landed into Namibia in the middle of nothing after a 10 hour flight. All that could be seen was flat, empty plains and the airport, which is quite a novelty because in the past when I've expected landing into a country to be like that, it was always a concrete jungle. I happened to meet Susie and Vicki from New Zealand in the security queue, who were staying at the same hostel as me and we shared the airport transfer through the barren landscape to the sudden jolt of Windhoek which ...

Etosha National Park to Windhoek

Early start, as we started our journey at 6.30am to the capital of Namibia, Windhoek. Arrived mid afternoon, with the option to explore the city centre. In the evening we went to Joe's Beerhouse, where my mixed grill meal consisted of ostrich, crocodile, springbok, oryx, kulu, and zebra.... superb!!

Windy Corner

... is not pleasant. March 20, 2008 Windhoek, Namibia After the bus was repaired we continued on the Golden Highway for another 9 hours when the bus broke down again in the middle of nowhere; somewhere between Rundu and Grootfontein. The problem this time was the hydraulic system. Bizarrely, one of the passengers was a mechanic and had brought his tool box, he was able to repair the bus' hydraulic system, but it took at least two hours. Some of ...

Wayward Luggage Returned!

... city at the central tourist office, but now we had a bit of a dilemma. We had too much luggage, our camping gear to return, and a long time to kill until our evening bus! Solved the camping gear issue by asking the tourist office if we could leave it there, then ringing the hire company and asking them to pick it up. Next issue to solve was we now had the new things we had bought and our original packs, so we took ...
