Endstation Christchurch

Wandering Round

Had a look round Sumner this morning - nice little place. Decided however I wanted to be closer to the City Centre so I booked into the City Oasis hostel - another Sir Cedrics which have all turned out pretty nice so far. Aside from that I simply wandered around Christchurch for the day and had an early night - feeling a little under the weather and not getting great sleep in hostels due to snoring fools. Finished another book - the final volume of Terry Goodkinds series, which means I now ha...

White Island - can it get more awesome??!!

... as it is called. Just imagine the size of the vulcano when it errupted back in the day and turned itself inside out to become a lake of 606 km2!! Massive! We are staying here one night as we were supposed to head to the Tongariro Natural Park with another 3 vulcanos, to do the 17km / 7-8 hour hike across the pas, but upon arrival here at Taupo we have been told that the area has been closed due to really bad weather; rain ...

Vandaag speelde Elemeno P ...

Whakatane

The longest day continues................ We continued westwards along the top of the 'East Cape', the twisty road still giving only occasional glimpses of the sea, in between the heavily forested hillsides. The steep sided cliffs had many small landslides that had left rock debris strewn in the road. Now it was just a plod, enjoying the forest views and the autumn colours and the deep blue sea. We cut over river valleys on long bridges and were heading south west ...

Whakatane

Drive through the East Coast drive had it's moments, at times it was very interesting and scenic and other times rather tedious. We travelled a large distance on dirt roads and our little Sunny was like a dust magnet and besides half chocking to death our luggage was hardly recognisable when we opened the boot, it was all covered in an inch of dust. All this probably had nothing to do with the ...

Géysers, volcanes y ballenas

... luna u otro planeta.

... errupts stones at the speed of bullets. some that can be the size of cars!), and gas masks (steam not poisenous but can irritate your throat). oh, and a stash of sweets each so we couldn't taste the hot steam. then we set off for two hours. we had an absolutely fantastic tour of the volcano. we were inside the crater, saw the steam coming out the rocks, saw bubbling pools, the remanats of the last erruption in 2000, saw blocks of sulphur and stone of yellows and reds. it ...

White Island Volcano Tour

Today we went on a tour to NZ most active marine volcano. We had a lovely day for it, blue skies all day. Bit chilly on the boat out there, 1.5 hour ride, but luckily I came prepared with layers, hat, scarf and my Eskimo hood jacket. Some people were wearing shorts!! Is there something wrong with me??
