The courtyard
Madrid, Spain
This is my own photo of the courtyard. If there were any in earlier posts, they were probably loaded automatically by travelpod from the "Cat's Hostel" website.

our room at the hostel
Madrid, Spain
There are 8 beds in the room, with lockers to match. It's about 9' x 20'. We had to pay for 2 beds so we use the top bunk for stuff and sleep in the bottom bunk.

Another pic of hostel in Madrid.

Madrid
Jun 14, 2006

ahh Madrid. . . lovely to be in Spain again! Madrid wasn't as exciting as I'd hoped, perhaps we just didn't know where the kids hang out. the Reina Sofia museum was fantastic though. and Cat's Hostel was fun/funny. Our daily schedule consisted of tourist stuff in the mornings, followed by finding a spot to watch World Cup futbol, followed by wal...

My Rant
Apr 23, 2007

So, last night I got the closest I've been in a LONG (as in years) time of losing my temper and blowing a gasket. It was just a bad night written all over it. In fact, I found out today that one of my friends in the program was mugged last night! Crazyness! It started innocent enough in that I had met an austrialian girl in my stay at Cat's Host...

I'm good at planes and buses, but trains are new.
Jun 10, 2005

Last night I had the first of what I'm sure will be many transportation disasters. In the morning I went to the Atoche station in Mardid and booked a train to Barcelona for 10pm. I was with Tracy, who had a ticket on the same train, and we didn't expect any hassles. What they failed to mention was that even though all the day trains leave from A...

Arrival
May 24, 2008

We´ve arrived safe and sound in Madrid, although we did a bit more walking than we expected last night after the Metro stopped running 3/4 of the way through our trip from the airport to the hostel. Granted, it was 2 in the morning. Our first priority this morning will be to buy supplies for lunch(es). Fritz and Jenny

1st day
May 24, 2008 (3 photos)

Our first 24 hours were spent travelling - literally. Our plane left Portland around 4:30 PM local time and arrived in Amsterdam 10 hours later, where it was 11:30 AM the next day (2:30 AM portland). Dinner on the plane was actually pretty good, AND included a small bottle of wine PER PERSON, which was totally sweet! I passed the time watching 3...

Saturday Night
May 25, 2008

When last we left you, we had just had dinner (goat cheese on toast, gaspacho, bread and calamari) at La Trucha. This was meant to hold us over until ten that night when there was supposed to be a paella party in the basement of the hostel. Free paella with a glass of beer! The paella had whole shrimps in it, which is grose to Jenny, but it was ...

Spain's capital
Jul 11, 2007 (3 photos)

I met back up with Claire at the Cat's Hostel in Madrid for a two night stay. From here we are making our way down south to Morocco. After spending so much time on the much cooler coast of Spain, Madrid seemed very hot and boring to us. We did go out a little to walk around and explore but mainly spent our time planning the rest of our trip tog...

Sep 28, 2007 (9 photos)

Hey everyone... the entries will be a bit less often now as I am currently in Africa and internet access isn't going to be always available, but i'll get to all that next, now for Madrid! Madrid is my favorite European city! I was really suprised and didn't expect to love it as much as i did. The architecture is indescribable! Literally, haha i ...

Welcome to Madrid
Feb 17, 2008 (5 photos)

The alarm went off at 6:00am and up we got up to prepare to move on to Madrid. We showered, dressed and breakfasted - the last of the cereal and some of the left over pizza that Belle could not finish last night. We finished squeezing everything into the two suitcases and our backpacks. We then disagreed on whose suitcase was heavier - I thought...

El Rastro and the Sights of Madrid
Feb 18, 2008 (7 photos)

We had a night of interrupted sleep thanks to our fellow residents. There were three girls in particular who seemed to be locals but perhaps usually lived outside of the city and were staying at the hostel in order to enjoy a night out on the town. They were very noisily as they were on their way out at 10:00pm, then back in at 11:00pm, turning ...

Bocadillas, Bocadillas, Bocadillas!
Feb 19, 2008 (5 photos)

We started very slowly again today. Our sleep had again been interrupted by inconsiderate room-mates, this time a French or German couple who turned up at 1:30am, turned the light on, chatted loudly, fiddled around with their luggage, played music through their laptop and just generally were a pain in the proverbial. We got going about 8:30am an...
