Friends had warned us to make reservations for Manchester as it was moving-in weekend for all of the universities, but we didn't pay attention. When nothing was available, we decided to head north towards Scotland and stop along the way. Unfortunately, everything was booked for miles. We drove on and on--listening to a truly awful song (Sweet Dreams My LA Ex) every so often to keep us awake. After several hours, we finally found a hotel with a staffed lobby who looked up availability at other...
Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom andreadI am in Edinburgh after a long day of trains that began with a picnic and a nap in a park in Cambridge. I planned on touring the city or the school or something and taking in as much of that little nucleus of history as I could, but then I fell asleep in the park. I think it was worth it. Besides, I had my luggage with me and dragging it through the city didn't sound terribly appealing. So I napped in the park. Me and the rest of Great Britain will go to bed sunburned, congested from the mass...
Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom darynj1216Good news! I have arrived in Edinburgh safe and sound, having disembarked the plane just after the crack of dawn. The flight was smooth and uneventful, although I think I should receive some sort of compensation for being forced to sit through Kangaroo Jack and Just Married, back to back no less. After chatting with a fellow Torontonian in the airport (he'd been away for a few months and wanted to know the latest on the SARS situation) I found the bus from the airport into the city center, wh...

Edinburgh, United Kingdom isa_oxfordCaught the train up to Scotland at the crack of dawn and watched the beautiful scenery go by. Had to carry my extremely heavy bag up the hill to the old part of Edinburgh - note to self, will have to chuck/send stuff home else I will have serious back problems on my return to oz. The backpackers I stayed in was really great - clean, friendly, and right opposite the Castle. Edinburgh is so beautiful. Many more proficient and expressive writers than me have described its charms so I won't exhau...

Scotland, United Kingdom jrcormackThis past weekend, 5 of us (KC, Kerry, Kenny, Narissa and I) escaped Italy and headed to an English speaking country, and it was great! We got into Glasgow, Scotland late at night, ready for a fun weekend ahead. We stayed in Glasgow the first night, wandered around the city. Went to the Cathedral (which was in Gothic style...quite the change from the ever present Italian Renaissance style), and visited the cemetery above. While in the cemetery above, it started to snow, which was another indi...
Edinburgh, United Kingdom kdut18th and 19th April - Edinburgh We were up early again to visit the Glasgow Necropolis before leaving for Edinburgh. The Necropolis has many huge gravestones and crypts. It also had great views of the city and cathedral but it was freezing so we didn't stay too long. We then went into the cathedral at the bottom of the "big grey rock" which was the necropolis. The cathedral was huge, with many different sections on different levels. It was quite spectacular inside. We then picked up our lugga...
