We arrived in Cairns early evening and got a taxi to our hostel which was about a 20 minute walk from the centre. It was a really nice hostel and was quiet with it being a bit out of the centre of town. The hostel ran regular buses into town but it wasn’t too bad to walk either. That night we went to the Woolshed for dinner as this was included with our hostel stay. The meals were basic but free and filling enough so we couldn’t complain!
The next day we went to the lagoon ...
Winter has definitely arrived in Sydney, with some of the coldest and wettest weather in years, so we've organised to meet up with Bobby and Greg, and Mike and Bev in Cairns on the 7th July. Murray wants to take our Subaru Forester, but Dianne is not keen on the long drive (she's already done it at least three times), so she decides to fly to Airlie Beach ( actually Proserpine, for A$119 on those great, cheap Jetstair fares) and catch up with Murray there. Murray sets off on 18th June, drivin...

Okey so we have flown to Cairns from Darwin and the weather is much more copable over here as there is some breeze now instead of blazing heat. Cairns again has an american feel to it and hardly any high rise buildings. Its also the party town of the north and there are loads of bars etc with deals for backpackers..unfortunately none of these cater to the music we like to if you like dance, r 'n'b etc this place is for you!! We had a failry ok room in a hostel not far out of the centre. Here ...
Cairns, Queensland, Australia ouradventures08On Christmas morning, we open our small selection of presents left by Santa. We got a snorkel and goggle set each which will come in very handy indeed over the next few months. We have been invited to the pool for some Champagne and a swim, so we can't turn down an opportunity like that. I only have one small glass as I'm driving today and don't particularly relish the idea of having my license taken away before we've even set off. It is very hot and sunny today with no clouds to be seen anyw...
Cairns, Australia sarahmarkOn the first day I arrived to Cairns, we(all 4 of us) went out on a bar and club tour in the town. In that tour I took part in some games and received a free Minjin swing from AJ Hectt(Bungy company), I did the swing two days later. It was fun and it was for free but no more then that.

We gave the van back after taking final photos of the cracked windscreen and the mileometer. The Britz guy didn’t seem at all bothered by the cracked windscreen or lost water cover. Probably sees vans in a worse state than ours. Or maybe it was because we paid for the maximum insurance cover. We did notice a place on the other side of the road from Britz, for windscreen repairs. Bet they do a ...

After the reef trip we'd done all we wanted to do in Cairns and were then waiting it out for the roads to open to travel south. So, we had a lot of lazy days here but one day we hired bikes, rode along the promenade by the sea and checked out the Botanical gardens. Eventually we grew tired of waiting for the roads to open and the supermarkets were out of fresh food despite the news saying that supplies had been delivered by boat, so we decided to fly ...
... wherever in pink flip flops and called us "mate" and actually said "fair dinkum" - he wasn't husband material as he gave me a 10 minute lecture on how smoking was going to shorten my life considerabley. i commented as later in the day that if smoking didn't get me then his driving along the Captain Cook Highway would, a sheer drop into the ocean halfway up a mountain at 110 km per hour certainly would. our first stopping place was the Rainforest Habitat wildlife park where we ...
Cairns, Queensland, Australia lincolnlady... compared the dive sites with the Similan Islands and the Similans came out on top. Now, 10 different dive locations will get 10 different opinions from 10 different divers and conditions are a huge part these opinions. On the positive side, we saw some extraordinary aquatic life. There were sea turtles absolutely everywhere - we probably averaged seeing at least one or two per dive. We also saw several reef sharks (harmless), amazing gigantic giant clams (these were the ...
