Mayan Mysticism in Tulum

A travel blog entry by filipmontberg

Rather than going to the popular resort for American college
spring-breakers, Cancun, we visited Tulum in the Yucatan peninsula in the
Mexican gulf. The place was amazing and we have been to the by far best beaches
of the trip, if not our entire lives here! Other than the beach we also made
some time to visit Mayan ruins as well as …

Day 9

We had a wander around Tulum now that we were a bit more refreshed and decided that we do actually like it here. Its cool, we just didn't have the best of starts! We had lunch then went shopping around for some bug spray because my god the mosquito's enjoy my legs! We also bought some flip flops cause michael forgot to bring any with …

Day 7

Well this was a stressful day to say the least!

We checked out of our hostel in Merida and went to the bus station to get a bus to Chichen Itza. Our plan was to take our bags with us, leave them in lockers at the entrance to Chichen Itza, and then get a bus to Tulum and go check in at a hostel there when we arrived. So we …

Tulum is slightly further south of Playa del Carmen and I arrived here and met Kim and Dave (England) who were keen to go and see the ruins of Tulum. We caught a collectivo to the ruins and walked over to the site. The Tulum ruins are very compact in their size and impressive for the amazing views that they have of the beautiful Caribbean ocean. …

The heat is on

Okay, we knew it was going to be hot, but omg it is so hot. Have no idea what the temperature is but staying in the shade and walking really slowly only means you sweat less. We arrived from Playa del Carmen on the local bus service, which had such strong air-con we were freezing the whole journey. As soon as we arrived in Tulum the heavens opened …

It was decent. We stayed for two nights and most of the staff don't speak english and it's quite worn down. However the breakfast was better than most hostels and it was quite calm and close to everything and cheap so we got our money's worth.

Dark and gloomy

We stayed in a private room for 2 nights.

This hostel was poorly lit and I'm not sure if the room was ever cleaned.

Although the bikes are advertised as free hire they are $50/day

The older staff were very nice but the younger staff/?cook was not very helpful and generally seemed a bit over it all.

I would skip this hostel and book one on the beach instead.
