... anymore Ill keep it, otherwise consider it gone. A picture says a thousand words so just see for yourself. I thought you would particularly like the shot with the Guatemalan boy scouts as it enhances the overall creepiness. These pictures are taken after 4 weeks of pretty much not shaving (with exception of the neck since that just really hurts)

later,
andy
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala lindseyhehman... hills/mountains so beautiful? Green elevation of the ground, so what?

I skipped Guatemala City (people consequently seem to skip Central American capitals) and went straight to Antigua.
Antigua, with risking repeating myself, is another very picturesque city. It got the mandatory colonial buildings and the surrounding tree covered mountains.
Antigua was the capital before Guatemala City but was abandoned after at string of earthquakes and volcano eruptions. Before that ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala mighty_ted... volcano glowed, and we stopped often to watch the red lava literally flow down the sides. Unbelievable. Definitely one of the coolest things we´ve ever done. When we got back down, we were absolutely exhausted. We went back our hotel, showered, and were asleep before 10 pm.

Tomorrow, we´re off to San Pedro de la Laguna, where we´ll be taking Spanish classes for a week. It´s on the Lago Atitlan, which is supposedly gorg, and we are super excited!
Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez, Guatemala namaste32... Called Mario at the school and decided just to take it as it comes - although I was frustrated.

Finally, the taxi arrived and left in search of my school. He was drving around about and according to my compass we ought to be close, when suddenly I saw Mario driving down the street on his scooter. I asked the driver to stop and then we let Mario guide us to the school.

A word of advise: Also keep notes less than 100 Q - the cab driver was unable to ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala chrisser71The road from Guatemala City took us up over some mountaneous hills. I thought we were driving up towards Antigua, but suddenly we were driving steeply downwards as it turned out Antigua naturally is settled in a valley surrounded by the famous volcanos. Antigua is only about 45 minutes drive from the capital - depending on the traffic of course, so we arrived around 2 pm.

Mario from the language school sent the driver away and said ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala chrisser71... tomorrow too. After a quick feast we booked a tour to Volcan Pacaya, a volcano about an hour away that is active and has lava flows. We had to hike up about 2kms basically straight up in parts, which had me absolutely knackered. The weather also started to close in and we got clouds and alot of mist in the air, it was hard to see more than about 10m in front of you. Half of the climb was through lush forest, before we hit the ash and ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala solskjaer20... on Sunday.

All throughout Saturday night, local families worked tirelessly on beautiful alfombras (carpets) for the Sunday morning parade.

The alfombras were made of flowers, fruit, vegetables, hand-dyed woodchips and even eggs, shaped into patterns on the cobbled streets for the entire path of the parade ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala cc_world_tour... churches still standing, full of foreigners and consequently also full of youth hostels, hotels, mansions, villas and other luxury accomodartions. Quite different from Xela...and on top of it, they don't even have red bananas here. That would alleviate my pain! :) (See here for + info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_banana ). Tofay, I finally moved to a decent place and this is going to be for 4 weeks. So if you ...
Antigua, Guatemala mymzy... in the dark/ We stayed at a great gueshouse run by a patient capable woman named Irma - who made us a great, wholesome and filling egg and fruit breakfast, then dealt with our coming and going to load the bikes, and then even let us linger on the internet the following morning well beyond check-out time. Our room cost about !3$ US -
Antigua, Guatemala courtrand... ground work ;) I was expelling from both ends in Reillys' toilet and then promptly went home to bed. Fortuantely that gastro episode lasted only hours.....) We thought that'd be safer than faffing around in bus stations with rucksacks. The city is billed, even by Guatemalans, as being extremely dangerous. We didn't go anywhere outside our little affluent ghetto of zone 10 without the company of the guys we'd met. And actually felt quite safe with the man with ...
