Caravella's backpackers was pretty good for the money paid. Me and Lisa had a 6bed dorm with bathroom which we had to ourselves most of the time. There was one other girl in the room but we never saw her except for when we were all sleeping. The facilities are good and the staff are really helpful and we good when it came to helping us arrange excursions and underwater camera rental. The are 2 huge kitchens and each dorm had it's own fridge. Only real downside was that all the communal areas were outside picnic benches and it would have been nice to have something indoor maybe with sofas or something. Pool was nice though and air con in rooms was a life saver.

We had a great time at the Caravella backpackers but unfortunately our bed was one of the worst and it had springs coming through the mattress...apart from this i really liked this hostel. The staff were freindly and very helpful.

Very welcoming - air conditioned double room at a reasonable price and good discounts on local food.
Also has a nice small swimming pool and is close enough to the centre of town without being on top of the nightlife. We stayed for four nights when we had only planned 2.

Granted Cairns humidity makes it difficult to keep any hostel comfortable but Caravella just felt old and run down. Service was adequate, facilities were OK. It was just an average experience....thus I would not recommend.

This week we find ourselves in northern Queensland sampling the delights of Cairns and Port Douglas. We had intended to book a dive boat to dive the reef and swim with dwarf minke whales. As seems to be the case in Australia with us, it wasn't to be! Everywhere was booked until late July. So we're now coming back here in late July having booked the …

It's nice to get to airports early. Being at the Melbourne domestic terminal over four hours before takeoff means I am offered an extra legroom (emergency exit) seat. The check-in lady asks her obligatory questions ensuring I'm in good health (if anything were to happen) and I'm handed my
        boarding pass.

I'd like to say that with the …

Last 2 days have been pool days at Craig's request (he's little feet hurt and he's terrified of all the rainforest twigs) but I didn't take much convincing as it's a good opportunity to work on the tan.

We did venture out to the gym yesterday and unlike the gyms of New Zealand, it was brand new and had great AC. I done a body pump class …

Today I was allowed to drive again! My foot has healed although I have a feeling it may be sore in a few days time when we have a 5hr drive. Driving isnt really that great, the car is about as powerful as a lawn mower and Louella just catches flies in the passenger seat leaving me to sing along to One Direction while breaking the 60mph speed limit …

cairns, the great barrier reef & cape tribulation

Cairns was a lot nicer that we expected as a city, although our hostel was bad - damp and very noisy! only stayed a couple of nights though and our trip to the reef more than made up for it. Not many photos though i'm afraid as most were taken underwater and not had them developed yet. It was though, as beautiful and magical as expected, and as we seem to have a problem ...
