We arrived in Kunming around 4pm and made our way to the hotel in 3 taxis. There were two complexes right next to one another, a hostel and a hotel, both called "Camellia". We assumed we were in the hostel and made our way there, but they had no knowledge of our booking and sent us back to the hotel. Luckily they had details of our booking, which …
Culture Shock
Well - what can I say - 48 hours after we were due to leave Auckland we finally landed in Kunming - exhausted! Unplanned stopovers in Auckland (they put us up at the Heritage) and again in Singapore (they put some of us up at the Crown Plaza - the others at Grand Mecure), also several hours in Bangkok airport where Jane took advantage of a Thai …
Beyond the Clouds
The Lao Cai, Vietnam/Hekou, China border crossing was easier than I expected, although by the time I got there after the bumpy 3-hour ride down from Bac Ha, I'd already had enough of buses for the day. Little did I know that I had my longest travel day ahead of me. After a short motorbike ride from the Lao Cai bus station, I moved through first the …

No toilets on second floor, no showers, staff are ignorant, the place stinks, the food is shite and expensive, the lights are dim , like the staff, I hate this rathole

The hostel was clean, but old. We didnt use the facilities very much. The bed was like concrete and unless yr accustomed to such a rock hard bed I suggest you try somewhere else.
We did ask the reception what we could do with 4 teenagers in their city, figuring they should be able to point us in the direction of some activities. Unfortunately all they could do was suggest viewing some seagulls at the park. Since we come from New Zealand seagulls are not exactly a novelty for us.
