Hmmmm, I have a bit of catching up to do.....will see how far I get, I am at the library and there is a limit of 30mins!!! The drive from Mission Beach to Cairns was lovely (and short). There is loads of sugar cane growing in the area and you see the little trains that they use to transport the cane "mulch" to the mills. Australia must grow a huge …
Cairns
I left Brisbane 9.30pm for flight to Cairns. I arrived in Cairns at midnight and did not get to the hostel until 1am. The hostel is really good as it has a swimming pool and two jacuzzi's. Also like Brisbane there is a swimming pool in the middle of the street as well. I have manly relaxed around the pool but I have had a few crazy nights out on …
Tropical Cyclone Yasi expected tomorrow
We were glad to have missed TC Anthony which was a Cat 2. Yasi is a Cat 4, a Severe Tropical Cyclone, in other words a bloody big one, with winds over 200km/h. We are therefore digging in for a few days until it has passed.
When we checked in to the YHA here we were informed that we will be confined to barracks from tomorrow lunchtime …
STC Yasi - Now up to Cat 5
8am here on Wednesday Yasi had been upgrgaged to a category 5 overnight. About 300 miles out to sea to the east of us at the moment. The winds are starting to pick up now. Not sure if we are being evacuated yet. Watch this space.
11am Wed Yasi is creeping closer to us at about 30km/h. Good news for us is that the centreline seems to now be …

MOsquito Bites: the feckers from mission beach are still there in strength
Cairns is a little odd, doesn't really seem to be that big a city, or have that much going on. THe only things to do here seem to involve tours out of the city to the rainforest in cape trib or out …

The YHA in Airlie Beach is a really tidy place, can't complain about it. As in most YHA, the crowd is a little older and more respectful of others, which we greatly appreciate. However, the activities advertized were not organized like the get together diners or the movie nights. It didn't really bother me that much but at least take down the signs so you don't get people think they pay to stay at some place where stuff is organized.

Some good things are lovely common areas, nice kitchen and breakfast area. Room most expensive I have paid, except for Sydney, and rooms are a bit cramped in the new section. If I had to it it again, I probably would not stay in the room with the ensuite bath.... If you stay on the courtyard side, I think it can be noisy. But I faced out back on the fourth floor and it was fine.
