Cairns

Hmmmm, I have a bit of catching up to do.....will see how far I get, I am at the library and there is a limit of 30mins!!! The drive from Mission Beach to Cairns was lovely (and short). There is loads of sugar cane growing in the area and you see the little trains that they use to transport the cane "mulch" to the mills. Australia must grow a huge amount of sugar as I have been seeing it since South Qld. Also a fair few bananas and Mangoes -pity the mangoes are out of season. Coming into Cair...

Cairns

I left Brisbane 9.30pm for flight to Cairns. I arrived in Cairns at midnight and did not get to the hostel until 1am. The hostel is really good as it has a swimming pool and two jacuzzi's. Also like Brisbane there is a swimming pool in the middle of the street as well. I have manly relaxed around the pool but I have had a few crazy nights out on the town. One of them was with the people from the hostel and the other was with people from my cruise to the Great Barrier reef. This was a great d...

Last week in Oz

After the Whit Sundays, me and Amanda headed to townsville for an overnight stay on Magnetic Island. There is not much to see or do on the Island but there is a Koala sancturaray where you can hold a Koala which is something we both really wanted to do. We had a great afternoon getting our photo's taken holding a variety of animals including a snake, a lizard, a cockatu, a baby croc and of course a koala. We also got to feed some very colourful parrots which was a bit scary as there was about...

I'll never be a pirate... aargh!!

Cairns has been a bit of a downer after the magestic weather we had in Darwin. It didnt stop raining all week. Leaving all our new friends was a bit ****** too. But at least we got to meet up with some old ones. Malone, Ciara, Josie and Sinead were in great form when we met them. Ferghal wasnt. Unfortunately sickness had overtaken his banter. But we had some class nights out in the woolshed. Dancing on the tables and what not. I'd say scriver would be in his element in a place like this. Scru...

Visit to Cairns Aussie

We are just back from a week in Cairns Australia. Went snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef and into the rainforest. We have been to so many World Heritage Sites I can't believe it myself. It has been just amazing. I bought a snorkel and mask 2 weeks ago and we went to the pool in Wellington where Anthony taught me how to do it and I practiced a bit and did just fine on the reef. Another fear conquered. We stayed at YHA in Cairns and Port Douglas Aussie and they were just perfect. I'd recomme...

Finding Nemo!

After a long trip up the coast we finally reached the end of our bus pass and landed in Cairns and the most famous home to the Great Barrier and gateway into the north tropics of Queensland. Keep watching this space for the account of diving on the reef, a croc cruise in the Daintree and the sights of Cape Tribulation.

A little ranting/venting never hurt anyone, right?

I've just arrived in Cairns, where I am planning to go scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef! The only problem right now is that I have a cold and you can't dive with a cold because you can't clear your ears when you have a cold. So I may have to switch my plans around a little and stay in Cairns a little longer until this cold goes away. Because I am not leaving Cairns until I have done at least one dive! I also feel tired and a bit emotional. I miss home a bit, and I am worried about not h...

East Coast travel starts at Cairns

Here I am now at Cairns in the northern east of Australia. I was mentally prepared for the different climate but it's really a lot of humidity here (esp. compared to the dry heat of the Outback). And the sun's shining! No rain! I thought this is the wet season where the rain doesn't stop but this is still to come and has not yet begun. Lucky for me :-) From the first moment I arrived here I knew Cairns is different. It was late in the evening but everywhere was a party going on, and many peop...

Leaving Cairns

It's time to say goodbye to Cairns but I really enjoyed being here. The last night I went down again to the lagoon one last time, relaxed a little bit there, and then strolled at the Esplanade, giving the Night Markets a visit (bought a boomerang there), and had a very good pizza at an italian restaurant (there are plenty of them here - otherwise there's a lot of asian food everywhere). And now today before my flight to Brisbane I gave the Skyrail a short visit. But it was really too short. I...

Fifth Letter from Oz
