Pretty drive down, last bit in the dark as decided to leave at last minute, abandoning plans to go inland in search of quetzales.
As dusk falling passed through more oil palm plantations - the older ones have beautiful 2 storey wooden homes for their employees centred around a green, which in practice ends up being a football field.
Was directed to the only cheap hotel in town "al fondo" but no sign - good job I asked as I discovered in the morning, if ...
Small village on the main road but Tucan Hotel set back. Not cheap and only 2 showers/toilets shared between up to 4 people in treehouse, 4 in hammocks, multiple others camping plus 12 people in dorms when fully occupied. Female shower/toilet always full of men as bigger - thankfully came when quiet.
Cocked up the directions to the falls, Cascadas Verde & didn't turn left before hardware store. Ended up crossing the river on a tree trunk bridge & ...
... figured it was a fuel issue. Now, a few days later, we relize the problem was not Wesley but bad fuel. White smoke, which we were blowing, is a sign of too much water in the fuel. Of course we had to get the bad Diesel right before going over the Moutain of Death! Luckily Wesley is running fine now.
That night we parked in the middle of a pineapple field own buy yours truly, Del Monte. I never thought we would be enjoying Del Monte for it's beautiful sunset's!
... to the lagoons edge we saw two caiman staring at us. They were not that big, maybe a meter and a half long, but when they started edging nearer to us I quickly stepped back and ran down the path. They may not be big, but they can still take off a finger or possibly even a hand! Still, it was nice to be able to see these creatures without having a fence between you and them and it was also cool to see them for free.
We left for Carate on Saturday morning in a massive ...
... I knew I would feel like this and there isn{t a thing you can do about it. After six hours we finally came back to the coast and gave ourselves a well earned break on a paradise looking beach lined with palm trees.
It wasn{t long now. We just had to cross the river with crocodiles and bull sharks in it. This is the place that{s impassable at high tide. Apparently the sharks swim up the river mouth...

... We arrived at La Leona ranger station at 2:45pm, but we weren't done yet; there was another hour's hike needed to get to the tiny hamlet of Carate from where the "colectivo" taxi would depart at 4pm to take people back to Puerto Jiménez. At Carate there is a small supermarket, and you can only imagine how good a cold beer was after six hours of hiking in intense heat! By this stage I was feeling absolutely shattered; not only from the hiking, but also ...
Puerto Jiménez, Puntarenas, Costa Rica matt.s.wise... the Osa Peninsula, which National Geographic called the most biologically intense place on Earth. Up to this point in the trip, I hadn't seen wildlife even on my hikes and was looking forward to finally seeing some tropical animals. During my stay there, I saw some scarlet macaws, which are parrot-like birds which are red, blue, and yellow. I also saw chestnut-mandibled toucans, squirrel monkeys, white-face capuchin monkeys, caimans, and crocodiles. During a sea ...
Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica joeleeisOjochal is a teeny little town, not even in the Lonely Panic if you can believe it. It has all the necessary amenities including a French baker man, an internet cafe, and a grocery store. It doesn´t have many luxuries such as telephone service, power 100% of the time, and paved roads. Jen and Lee Ann Lee bought a house here and it is appropriately named La Escapada. Woody and Heather and our favorite Kiwi settled in for a much needed week of ...
