We had a fun stay here during carnival - shame about the massive bed bugs, the air conditioning that didn´t work, and the rude hostel management.....all in all, a bit of a kick in the teeth considering the extortionate rates they charged for the carnival package.

          First stop rio!

A travel blog entry by gill.kelly on Feb 02, 2017

Entering into Rio as my first stop was a daunting yet exciting experience. There is no doubt about it it is an incredible city. I stayed in a hostel near copa cabana beach. It is just how I imagined... Brazilians exercising, Capirinhas in abundance and the excitement of forthcoming carnival. The first day I met some nice people in my dorm and went …

Nothing like a little stroll on a Sunday morning down the beach. And trust me, nothing is like a little stroll down Copacabana beach at any time. I took the metro a couple of stops to Cantagalo which is the last before Ipanema in order to walk it back. By chance I came across a 'Starbucks' and thought I wouldn't mind a coffee. Trying to get in took …

This morning was my second visit out to the Olympic Park or Parque Olimpico da Barra, as it is known here. The difference from a few days ago was that it began with a bright blue sky and a sun that just got hotter and hotter. And hotter. Which was just as well as the water polo was taking place outside.

Although seating was allocated, the …

The Cabanacopa hostel backs onto a national park. Needless to say, there are wild animals in the park. I had noticed a small poster at the rear, open kitchen area that mentioned there were monkeys about and you should not feed them. To be honest, I did not notice any wildlife, but yesterday I did see a little monkey climbing along overhead cables …

          Day 14 - Downtown Rio

I was down to my last two full days and had a couple of things in mind. One was to visit the Statue of Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado overlooking the city. The other was to use the cable car to visit Sugar Loaf, the big hill on the shoreline that is evident in every postcard that you see from Rio.

          Only problem was the weather.
