So we finally capitulated and made the 2-hour trip to Etnaland, which is in the middle of nowhere, to the left of Catania.

We arrived at the advertised opening time of 9.30, but were pipped at the post by a hundred or so eager teens and Tweens and their parents...... It's gonna be a loooonnnnnnggggg day, I thought.

At 8.00am we were driven by a chauffeur to the airport. We checked in with no wait at all and went to explore the airport which took about 10 minutes!
