Greyhound to Ailie Beach

Overnight bus to Airlie Beach, 11 hours drive :-( On the bus I met Kath, a german girl but we spoke only english, was good. When we got to the bus station in Airlie Beach we met Chris, an Irish guy and we 3 went together to the same hostel, the Bush Village. A nice hostal with bungalows, own bathroom and small kitchen. I really liked it. Kath and I had the same room and Chris was on the next bungalow next door. Sandra, the german girl from Cairns, was also in the same room, she organized it f...

Sailing in the Whitsunday Islands

We took the bus from Townsville to Airlie Beach where we found a nice little hostel just out of town called Bush Village Backpackers. The family that owns it rescues wallabies so I got to hold and feed a wee baby wallaby whose mother was hit by a car. They had two older ones in their yard that were very tame too. On our second day in Airlie Beach we got a ride into town and wandered around the shops and pubs. We had a pint at Magnums, bought some books at the second hand book store and hung o...

Airlie Beach – Thursday 22nd to Friday 23rd & Sunday 25th to Tuesday 27th October
During my two full days in Airlie, I did very little. The town isn’t much more than a high street with shops, hostels and bars. I spent some time going for walks to take photos of the picturesque blue sea and sunbathing at the hostel. The evening I got back from sailing, a lot of us met up at a bar, which had cheap jugs of beer and free pizza, before going to an Irish bar to watch Liverpool v...

more knackered than "wicked"

Well,,, things didn`t go to well when we walked in blistering heat as far as the airport to pick up our camper van {slight over exageration!} it was a complete shed we wouldnt have put a dog in it!! so we walked away and promptly booked a bus ticket to sydney,,,, caught the overnight greyhound bus to Arlie beach it took 10 hours but went surprisingly quickly as the guy stopped every couple of hours to let us strech our legs, not that we needed to as we had the best seats on the bus at the bac...

Favourable Odds!

We are finally realising that we are not meant to be travelling around Australia as we are! Every time we try going anywhere it is fraught with miss-adventure or chaos! Needless to say we have not really struggled but the frustration is definitely evident. Our trip to Airlie Beach was no different! Having a wonderful base at Simon and Catriona's house, we decided that it would be far easier to borrow a hold size bag from them (as Kirsty's is broken) to pack into. Unfortunately this bag was ju...

White sand, blue sea and...jellyfish

Having heard so much about it, we headed off to the infamous Whitsundays for a few days. We made our base at Airlie Beach, a small touristy town with more people in then the sleepy hamlet of Townsville, and headed off to some travel agents to get a deal on a sailing trip around the Whitsundays. Airlie Beach revolves solely around tourism, this does mean that there are more people and it is full of us backpackers but it also means that everything is that bit more expensive :( Basically the Whi...

The Whitsundays

Paul and I checked in to our hostel in Airlie Beach - Bush Village Boutique Backpackers. It was a row of little cabins with hammocks hanging out front lined up to the main reception, lounge, and pool. We shared our cabin with a fellow traveling on his own from Tel Aviv. We walked into town along this lovely boardwalk beside the sea and marinas. there were many new condo-style residences going up. Contrary to its name, Airlie Beach doesn't really have a beach per se, but loads of space for man...

The Great Barrier Reef

Gday! Saturday: I have just arrived at Airlie Beach (The Whitsundays) and am looking forward to checking out the Great Barrier reef. I am heading out tomorrow on a boat and doing some snorkeling around the reef. Now where did I leave off....I have done ALOT these last couple of days as I am fitting in as much as I can. I did forget to mention one thing that I did a week and a bit ago in Armidale that I feel I should mention - I was given the privilege of being taken to a wildlife rehab in Arm...

The Whitsundays

After a 14hr coach journey (plus an extra hr waiting for a late bus) over night, i eventually arrived in Airlie Beach, the gateway to Paridise...well the Whitsunday Islands anyway :-) Went on a day trip to the whitsundays. The first thing we did was go diveing or snorkling...i chose snorkling which was amazing. I was full of mixed emotions as i got into the water, mixed emotions of fear and amazment. I hadn't been swimming for over 2 yrs so had to get used to that again, and ive never been a ...

The beaches are small and the surrounding landscapes dramatic, but best of all there are not huge numbers of boats out this way.

Maureen’s Cove was great for a snorkel and a shell hunt. Technical Issues

Well, whilst at Hervey Bay the laptop decided to die: thats why I haven't updated for a while. Its been so annoying seeing all the backpackers sipping coffee at MacDonalds whilst surfing for free! We are just about to leave Airlie Beach and head up to Townsville. It's been lovely here, will update more when the laptop is fixed.
