bangkok to Siem Reap

The drive from Bangkok toSiam Reap was much less arduous than we thought. Firstly we did not travel by pick up truck as we thought we would, and secondly the road has been sealed part of the way which helped immensely. In parts the road, and in particular the bridges, are not completed so we had to drive down into the dry riverbed and back upagain, but none of that was any problem really. We transferred from public bus at the Thai Cambodia border. Really interesting place what with the casino...

Angkor

Wonderful Angkor! Words cannot adequately describe what you see when you visit this ancient city with its series of temples. Our tour guide arranged for us to be there well before sunrise (I'm talking 4.30am) so there we all sat waiting and waiting. Gradually the outline became more apparent and finally there it was before us, beautifully reflected in the pool. I pinched myself a few times to realise I was actually there, at Angkor Wat calmly sitting and watching. It is a wonder to behold, mu...

Angkor Wat, Siem Reap

Yesterday our group went to Angkor Wat. I highly recommend visiting Angkor Wat if you have any interest in history. Having risen at 4am we arived there nice and early, had chairs brought out to us and sipped tea and coffee waiting for sunrise. I have to say it was the most bizarre tea I've ever had, but I still drank it because I'm heading for serious cup of tea withdrawal! There was quite an atmosphere as we waited for sunrise, which was wondrous. It was quite eerie but in a wonderful way to...

Angkor Wat

Hey all. The computer I'm on in our hotel is super slow, so this will be short. About a year ago we watched a Travel Channel series on the Mekong River, and that's pretty much how we ended up in Cambodia. We spent the day today exploring the ruins and temples of Angkor Wat, which is approximately 1000 years old. If you're interested, here's a great website with a ton of pictures. www.holiday-in-angkor-wat.com I'm wishing I could share our pictures as we travel, but that's much too complicated...

Angkor Wat, the 8th Wonder of the World

... We found a tuk-tuk driver who wanted us to book with our tour of Angkor Wat the next day so he drove us around to different guest houses until we found one we liked. We finally found one that was very backpacker oriented, the only problem was they did not have any rooms, but they did have what they called "domes". So we ended up staying in two domes for $1 a night. Oh a dome by the way is just a mattress outside with a mosquito net around it. It was actually really fun ...

Floating Village

... saw how these kids clambered over the boats like they were on solid ground I changed my mind about that.

A young boy was getting a hair cut at a Cot Toc Nam so I became a voyeur and watched how it was being done. Then I just walked around and excited the kids by taking their picture, showing it to them and watching their excitement. I had a soft drink at the shop and then clambered back onto our boat for the slow motor back to our dock and then the ride back to the hotel.

Temples of Angkor

... every direction, as you walk underneath them.

Angkor Wat itself was a huge system of temples surrounded by the mother of all moats or basically a lake! Though my favourite was Angkor Thom with it's overgrown temples. The roots of trees swallowing up ancient moss-covered stone. It was a lost civilization now being slowly devoured by the living and hungry forest. Apparently it's where Tomb ...

... in other Taxis were not so lucky forking out four times the going rate in hotel bills where the tuk tuk drivers dropped them off.

The stress of the arrival is soon melted away with a few delicious local Angkor Beers. The next morning we all rent bicycles and pedal to the sites together. I had allotted two days to see them and those days were certainly filled up to the max. We cycled for about 30 km each day ...

Angkor Wat-Day 2

... I've been here!" photo.

It was maybe only 11 by this point but I was all templed out. I can only walk around and see so much in a day and I had reached my limit. Before we went back though Keo stopped at a small temple called Banteay Kdei, where I walked around for a few minutes, and then went across the road to a large lake called Sras Srang. It was actually quite a beautiful place and would probably be a nice place to see the sunrise from...Maybe next time.

Angkor Angkor

... Sorry I can't tell you its name but I have sent home all the information I have on Angkor Wat). All up, I saw 20 temples close-up and was pretty much templed out by the end of it. The whole layout of the place is beautiful though - lovely wide tree-lined avenues connecting the temples, the moats, the majesty of the whole place.
I apologise for all the elephant photos - I was going through an elephant-mad phase.
