Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo
We had a brief encounter with Brisbane on our way to the Gold Coast, so didn't really have enough time to explore the City. Best bits for us were free wifi at the state library & Southbank area which is full of trendy little bars and cafes.
We went on a day trip to Australia Zoo which is about an hour out of Brisbane on the train. It …
Brisbane - Lazy Days
Our journey down from Townsville to Brisbane (via Rockhampton again) gave us the opportunity to witness a couple of natural phenomena along the way. Firstly, we drove right past a tornado (albeit a small one) whipping up dust and debris as it spun its way across a roadside field. Our second experience was a little more worrying - we drove right …
A quick city stopover
As we scaled one of the smaller peaks the day before in the Glasshouse Mountains we decided to up the ante and go on a higher and steeper climb. So we went to climb Mt Tibrogargan, though on arrival to the base of the peak on the map of the walks it had a large WARNING sign suggesting that the summit route is suitable only for experienced climbers …

Preparing to leave Aus - shopping in Brisbane
Hi! We're in our last destination in Australia - Brisbane. We'd heard that there wasn't much doing here, so we planned on staying for a few days before our flight out to New Zealand. It turns out that Brisbane is a really pleasant city for passing time in - we've done plenty of shopping in the cheapo shops in an attempt to find some warm clothes …

clean rooms, friendly bar area but as 1st experience in Australia my god over-rated charges for everything. Not sure what the deal is with hand your keys over to get a plate order every mealtime. Most other places will just give you a cutlery box & if you lose any of it then gets paid out of the deposit. Internet charge is a complete rip off especially when it doesn't work well. Sit in or near the big public library at bankside and it's free 24 hours. There are cheaper and better places to stay further down the road. Free bus into town ok but it only takes 15 minutes for a nice walk in so not really a selling point.

Great place, nice bar, pool, internet, kitchen, tv room, themed nights, happy hours, cheap food (sheeseburgers $3 on a Tuesday), nice staff, great atmosphere. Only issue I had were that the rooms are a touch expensive at $99 a night, plus they only turn the air-con on between certain hours to save money! Other than that - loved it (in fact we went back!)
