We headed off for the lift, actually it was a miners cage and could only carry 6 adults at a time up to the surface, it was very nice to get up out of there into the fresh air. The mines are extensive, on our 2 hour tour we only covered 1% of the total mine area and went down to level 3 out of 9 levels. Being a salt minor was an honourable profession and the minors were well paid. The salt was as valuable as gold and Krakow's wealth was built on this mine.
