25 Ekaterininskaya Street Odessa, Ukraine, 65000
The boat ride merits little mention. Some sunbathing on the top deck as the wind blew harder and harder from the north, through the widening mouth of the Bosporus, until we had to abandon all notion of staying out, and went inside to watch a movie. The meals came frequently, always cold, but tasty, and filling, and the company was probably the most friendly on the boat, a pair of Moldovans, and a Turkish man.
The boat itself was huge, 8 floors, two exterior decks, two discoteques, a resta...
The first thing that greeted us as we entered the Ukraine, Odessa, was a giant muscular baby smiling down on us with an evil grin. In the distance, we could see the Ptempkin steps leading up towards impressive buildings and wide boulevards. We decided to go in search of the train station, and since we saw some tracks, we decided it could not be far from there. But looking around, we could not decide which direction to follow the tracks in, and walked up the stairs instead. All 500000000 of th...
Odessa, Ukraine gabadorWhen I was eighteen and turned a corner in the Vietnamese town of Hoi An's market to find a whole row of stalls selling sandals, I thought I had found one of the best shopping places in the world. Today, I had a similar feeling on exploring Odessa's market with stall after stall selling boots. Forget Minsk's mall, these boots were affordable, ranging from $20-$30 in all the styles you could imagine. Of course, the market also sold other wares: clothes, hardware, produce, cleaners, toiletries,...
Odessa, Ukraine kally563It's my third day here in Ukraine now, but things really haven't been going like I planned. I've been so busy trying to arrange tickets, visas and the like that I haven't been able to actually enjoy where I am much. Yesterday morning was entirely wasted trying to print out forms, fill them in and then get them scanned and sent to the travel agent in Belarus. It wouldn't have been such a problem had the staff at the hostel not been so distracted with other responsibilities to help me scan them...
Kyiv, Ukraine xeriusWe came to Odessa by train from Moscow on 31 Dec 2007 to celebrate a new year, but was very-very cold. We stayed at a "Zirka" hotel, which is very cheap and mostly occupied by local *****s who wait in the lobby for their prey or being taken here by the young ukrainian males. Although, every room comes with a tv set and a toilet/shower. It was extremely cold in the rooms and we had to change the room three times before we could get a decent temperature. I found all the hostel around Ukraine us...
Odessa, Ukraine zhenia... and what not....they still got wickedly drunk every night. Beer and tons of vodka under the most beautiful stars sitting on the beach at night....good times!! Well after two nights of loud loud "death-core" music I was somewhat happy to move on to new adventures. So we took a bus to the next town where we parted ways and said our goodbyes. I exchanged the last amount of money I had and bought some lunch and a bus ticket to the big city where i was going to ...
Odessa, Ukraine dylanboyle... that much extra food into one's stomach. Over breakfast we did have a fun time swapping stories with the uncle visiting after moving three years ago to San Francisco to land a job in "security". I might add on a completely unrelated note that Odessa is known to be the most Mafia-ridden city in Eastern Europe. Just sayin'. Made me appreciate the comparatively benign badassness of my own uncle. Tanya then took us out on the town, the main things I can ...
Odessa, Ukraine mishaley... lane -- that is, we would have if a center lane had existed. I would have offered a few objections along the way, but I felt it wise not to distract him. Just got back from spending an hour anchoring a table on the terrace outside the Hotel Mozart in the shadow of the Opera House, newly restored in all its Viennese splendor. Sipping coffee and reading Leo's first sketch. I think I'll give their restaurant a try tonight, my last evening here in Odessa.
Odessa, Ukraine peyton... occasions. (Except for the biznessmany, of course.) Service tends to be quite good with a 4-1 waiter to guest ratio. The restaurant is decorated like a monastery, with crude modern icons on the walls. Across from me, a large flat screen TV is showing children's cartoons, then a children's show with puppets, then a film of a bear splashing in the waves at the ocean somewhere, then interior shots of a 19th century mansion -- all accompanied by a single jazzy ...
Odessa, Ukraine peyton... looking a combination of oh-so-cute and oh-so-silly! But...nice to see such a tradition and respect for teachers! Well...despite the festivities, I was longing for a return to the coast for some reason...and...the city of Odessa on the Black Sea! To make a long story short....Hassle after Hassle preceded my travels...as "NO" was the word of the day (actually, the word of the day before...and...the day before that ...
