The Big Apple

Back in New York and staying at the Big Apple Hostel off Times Square i set to, wandering the streets and window shopping. I made sure i had my camera and took lots of touristy photos which i hadnt been able to take because of poor weather the previous time. Although i missed travelling with people it was nice to be travelling by myself again and to have the freedom to do whatever, whenever. Only one night in New York before i caught the shuttle to JFK airport where i spent the night sleeping...

So the Big Apple was our first stop. Great! stayed with Laura and Paul in their new apartment on the Upper East Side. Gracious hosts. After a hectic day of Rucksack shopping (Yawn) Laura and Paul treated us to a swanky dinner at the Buddha Bar in the meat packing district. Julius surprised us with an unexpected visit... so with Jules and Spyro around and a resturant with a large wine cellar we dont need to fill in the rest...... Thanks Paul and Laura, special visit as always.

Hi, This place is so cold, pilot said on arrival it was going to be 32 degrees, I was thinking that doesn't sound too bad. Upon checking my diary which has the conversion. I realised that equaled zero degrees Celsius. Cold!!! Mum thank you so much for making sure I packed my gloves, I needed them strait away. Did I repeat its soo cold. I also had Willem Dafoe on my plane, it's strange here becasue you can use mobiles until the plane starts taxiing. He was a few seats in front of me and I coul...

USA - East Coast

15th April - 22nd April Days 77 - 84 USA - East Coast The US of A, a refreshing change from the hectic cities of South America. After a few months on the road, my week or so in the US felt like a holiday within a holiday...I was able to recharge my batteries before heading off down to Mexico to continue. My week here was a bit of a road trip. I bought a greyhound (bus) ticket and travelled up the east coast from Washington to Boston and back stopping at Philadelphia and New York along the way...

New York!! New York!!

"New York, New York - king of the hill, top of the heap" as the Frank Sinatra song goes. Wash our mouths out with soap but we country bumpkins LOVED New York! There is just so much to do, see and experience and contrary to our belief, we found New Yorkers to be very friendly, helpful and obliging. However, one of the ultimate nightmares of travelling happened on the way to NY - our luggage went missing! We left Lima, Peru on an early flight that had been changed (since we booked) from a direc...

Saratoga Springs - New York State

We decided to get a bit of a feel for New York state so went to the bus station and with guide book in hand looked at the destinations and chose Saratoga Springs. A place with hot springs sounded just the ticket only it was not like Australian hot springs! In Saratoga it is pumped into expensive spa resorts and one has to pay dearly to "take the waters". It is also pumped into drinking fountains in the town and you can supposedly taste the difference between various springs on a tasting tour....

NYC again. Exciting times with the Edwards'

Woop G'day g'day peoples, your friendly neighbour here, with yet another update from the US of A. Sunday saw me once again in the hustle and bustle of new york city. Seems I can't get enough of the place. Anyhoo, after hauling my stuff off the train and onto the subway and off the subway, i found myself luggin all my stuff around the city streets looking for the Big Apple Hostel. After walking past it three or four times, I found it camouflaged underneathe a sea of scaffolding and roadworks. ...

Today we stopped at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and got to look around the halls and the sporting facilities that the students have. We then drove on to Philadelphia where we saw the Philly's home ground and the Town Hall and Liberty Bell before heading into New York City. When we got to New York we went for one last Contiki dinner before saying farewell to the group. We then stopped by Times Square to see the lights. Oct 28th - On a very very rainy day we caught the ferry ove...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Big Apple Hostel New York City

Good location, but....

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is a good hostel with excellent value at a very central location. One question to keep in mind: do you actually want to stay 1 block from Times Square? Surely it's central, but TSQ is extremely busy and there surely are nicer areas to stay (SoHo, Greenwhich etc). That said, 4 persons per room is good, common area inside is so-so but there's a nice courtyard. At the moment (summer 2004) there's some reconstruction going on that doesn't seem to be ending anytime soon so this is not too quiet an area. Staff in general is not friendly.

Disgusting/belligerent

from A TripAdvisor Member
Loud, cramped, does not change linens so sweat smells

float into halls, but kids do not notice. dirty kitchen flea bitten cat, which i did not know had fleas till until after i left premises. kitchen too small for amount of people, so you cannot eat there in the dining hall except in shifts. hard to make calls on few pay phones--always in use. For the price, i have been to places with sheets changed daily--i was new and it was the first ny hostel i saw. THE WORST part---FLEAS/BEDBUGS. I woke to quarter sized welts on neck arms legs---i was disfigured for over a year. The manager said I must of gotten it elsewhere. he argued with me and was unmoved by my shocked tears, though a few foreigners seemed disturbed by my welts. the manager looked annoyed and asked me to leave for crying. i was planning to leave as i could not stay and be feasted upon. NO REFUND-he acted like I was scamming.

Right. I picked it up on the sidewalk like he suugested. THE BELLIGERENCE. ALSO, his staff acted put out I WAS PISSED--who would not be? Maybe the creep manager is gone by now but the place is ugly energy. If i was not in an intensive summer course, a polaroid and small claims court would have helped my medical /pain and suffering and taught him a lesson--i was only there 2 days.

Great for a hostel

Stayed here in December 2003. Definitely a hostel, but private rooms are available. I stayed in a private room, and though it was small, it was definitely adequate. Building is old, but it is clean. The bathrooms are all shared--they are kept clean regularly, however, depending on your floormates, they can be destroyed without warning (not within the hostel's control). There is no elevator, so be prepared to take the stairs.

The BEST thing about this hostel is that if you're traveling on a tight budget, you CANNOT get a better location. Right in the heart of all the best things. Everything you need to see in the city is within walking distance, but the subway is also a stone's throw away. I felt perfectly safe walking around after dark, and I am a very paranoid traveler...so that says something. Sure, there are other hostels that may be "nicer" in the city, but none can beat Big Apple's location!

Decent place

We had a private room at the Big Apple. It was bigger than I'd expected from the other reviews, and the bed was comfortable. The hosts put a rollaway bed in the room for my son at no extra cost. The hostel was very convenient - close to Times Square and a nice deli 2 doors down. We saved $50 with one of the tour brochures. The luggage room was nice to have once we'd checked out. The bathrooms were fairly clean, and nice tubs with lots of hot water. The common area was small, but my son enjoyed playing the games. A few tips: it was warm at night, it was a little noisy from people coming in late, and don't put anything you want to keep near the trash can. The cleaning lady threw out our dirty clothes bag with some of our clothes in it and a gift bag with Hershey's chocolate in it! Overall, it was a good experience.

Great location

I was just there this past week (Dec 3-5) and it was really great! The premises were exceptionally clean and the staff were very nice. Though the heating system was a little unbalanced, I was cold the first night and I roasted on the 2nd night! The location is ideal because everything is within walking distance. I would recommend to anyone to go there during their NYC experience.

Perfectly adequate

Excellent location and cheap room so can't complain! Four beds to a room is a big advantage over many other hostels, our room was pretty small and cramped though. With everyone's luggage on the floor there wasn't much room to manoeuvre. Pretty much airless and dark day and night thanks to a small, covered window. Not sure how they clean the rooms with people always coming and going but it seemed OK. Nice bathrooms - where I was there were two bathrooms per two rooms, so up to 8 people per bathroom. Never had to wait. Nice showers. Bathrooms really clean the first night I was there but looking a bit grubby by my second day (the same sodden bathmats were still there, unmoved).

Internet access available. Convenient but not overly cheap. Didn't use the communal areas.

Very helpful front desk

Great place in general. Very clean and centrally located.

Tip: Bring earplugs or try to get a room that isn't overlooking the street - very noisy! And as if it wasn't noisy enough to start w/, they were doing road work outside when I was there (late Oct. 2003).

Jackhammers till 2AM every night.

Additionally, to add even more to the you-are-on-the-roadcrew effect, you have to leave the windows open because you can't turn down the radiator heat.

Excellent Value for the Shoestring Traveller

from A TripAdvisor Member
A wonderful hostel and a fantastic New York City value. The hostel is ideally located on the fringe of Times Square, with convenient access to a bundle of NYC subway lines. I don't think you could ask for a better location in terms of neighborhood safety and the easy access to everything NYC has to offer. The rooms are standard, spartan hostel fare; but there are only four people to a room, so they actually feel quite spacious. Dont expect anything in your room other than beds and a fan and you'll be pleased. Bathrooms are very nice: clean, roomy, and some contains tubs for those of us who enjoy long, hot baths after a tiring day on the town. With the numerous cheap delis in the area, I didn't take advantage of the kitchen facilities, but they seemed to be adequate from what I saw. Common space is very limited, but with the entire city at your feet you won't want to spend much time hanging out in the hostel anyhow.

Feeling adventuresome? Not the Ritz, but a lot less expensive!

I stayed in the Big Apple Hostel over Labor Day weekend. First off, if you are the mints-on-the-pillow type, don't even think about staying in a hostel. It's a lot like borrowing somebody's spare room. The Big Apple seems clean and neat, and the desk staff were always friendly. The rooms aren't quite as pretty as on the website, but they're clean; the main difficulty is that the only things in the dormitory rooms are the beds -- no table, no chair, and really no room for a table. Hostel veterans know to pack light, and if you're lucky enough to get a lower bunk you can stash your luggage under the bed (or ask the lower resident if (s)he minds). A luggage room is available if you need to stay past 11:00 checkout. The kitchen was clean but simple. The common room was very small, and the Internet kiosks were bigger than the TV, but I wasn't there to hang out anyway. There is a back porch that gives lots of room to get fresh air (well, as fresh as it gets in Manhattan!). The facility is NOT accessible; there is a freight elevator earmarked for staff only, and a narrow staircase to the sleeping quarters. I was out of breath after climbing five stories. PS: The hostel provides sheets and blankets but you must bring your own towels. (Even when you go potty.) On the whole, it was a great adventure, and the price is excellent for the location. The Big Apple is $36/night (including tax at time of writing). Nearby hotels run in the $150/night range.

Cheapest ever one can get

from A TripAdvisor Member
i've been in NYC several times.. lodged in the cheap hostel named big apple hostel. i think one should pay some 100 or more to get a room in manhattan, and if you guys are panting with lack of money, the big apple located 6-7ave. and 45th st. will be sage choice. $28/a night. (6ppl dorm) surely the accomodation is not quite like the hotel around the island, but as a student, it is quite nice to meet other guys from all around the world. ;) am not advertising the hostel, it'll quite helpful if you do not have a deep pocket and wanna visit the city of consumption.
