Parque Santa Rosa # 928 Huaraz, Peru
After our previous entry, we had aspired to set out on another trek. This time for 8-10 days around a mountain range called the Huayayash. We had days of rest in Huaraz in mind after the Santa Cruz, and desperately wanted to relieve our stomach bugs we´d picked up. But days turned into more days and we were finally rested and recovered and set up a trek with, i guess, a really shady agency. We had paid our money and expected to leave on saturday, but friday night got a visit at 10pm from a gu...
Huaraz, Peru destin8ionWe arrived in Huaraz after a bearable eight hour bus journey, the only downside being that the loo was for urine only - yes I've never heard that one before either! After one night at Benkawasi hostel, which was to be our weekend home for the next few weeks, we loaded all our luggage onto a minibus (combi) with no roof rack and only a couple of ropes to hold them all in place. As the next 30 minutes was uphill over some rather rocky terrain we spent longer looking out of the window to spot fa...

... the mountain ranges on bikes...lots of fun, pictures tell the story,,, on the way back....a downpour fit for noahs arc stopped us in our tracks...being the brave soldiers we were, be it are, we battled on only to see our map become 15 soggy pieces on the ground. With spirits high, i recall singing pippi longstockings at one point on the decent home...cycling in circles was done....hotel was found...hot showers and mangoes were had...

... m after 3 hours of walking. This time we didn't had any problem with the altitude. The effort was worth while as the surrounding mountains and waterfalls during the hike were truly amazing. Once we made it to the top, the view on the lagoon was breathtaking. The way back was less hard as it was most of the time down hill. Once we were back in Huaraz we enjoyed a well deserved huge hamburger with fries in La Brasa Roja. This is a good recommended ...
Huaraz, Peru astridenellen... back, we just told him we were disappointed that we didn’t get into the jail. He said that the jail stopped the tours a while back because he had taken a guy from CNN in who unbeknownst to him had a hidden camera and took a lot of incriminating footage of tourists doing coke with the in-mates. So it looks as though no one is getting in for a while.
We flew to back to Cusco and then onto Lima. One thing I wont miss about South America is the very relaxed ...

The buses out here are plush. We were actually able to sleep pretty well and recline almost horizontal. If only our driver wasn´t speeding around hairpin turns at 80mph in the middle of the night and hitting potholes I probably wouldn´t have woken up at all. Caroline had her pillow stolen on the bus and was asked to pay for it upon leaving! And we have a photo above as ...

After dinner we went back to Doña Doris´s house and slept for twelve hours. The next day we we woke up and had a light breakfast. We decided to head out to central Lima. Our first stop was the museum of San Francisco it was very cool. We had a guide take us down through the underground tunnels or catacombs where we saw tons of bones and skulls ...
... Municipalidad or City Hall, and assorted businesses. La Iglesia de San Francisco is a colonical church with underground catacombs featuring over 25,000 real human skeletons (buried between the late 16th and early 19th centuries) arranged in artistic patterns, and also a beautiful library with mysterious, oversized books and spiral staircases in Harry Potteresque form (we cant take photos...so sad). but something a little ...
