Part 5: Taking to the skies from Iquique

... backward or forward or a combination of both directions. Once I got the hang of flying this big kite sufficiently well, I was allowed to make gradually longer flights from further and further up the dune until after 4 days of 'playing' in the sand, the instructor, called 'Pato', finally allowed me to launch from Alto Hospicio. The nervous feeling was no less on ...

... trees outside our hostel. They looked like cormorants (there were loads of them) and they made noises like pigs ´oinking´. We walked along the beach one day and saw around 20-30 Peligans all nestled together on the roof of a building. From Iquique we got the bus to San Pedro, 6 hour bus ride with 1.5 hour stop over in Calama followed by another 1.5 hours. Quite a nice ride, amazing scenery particularly as we came into San Pedro.

Beauty and Blisters.. the Patagonian experience.

... a kind of mix between Florida and Las Vegas. So far these travels have seemed very busy with lots of organization required.. whatever day I have seems to be used planning my next steps and taking care of necessary chores. I´m looking forward to a few nice relaxing days in the sun here.. although I´m not looking forward to my blisters coming into contact with salt water.. putting myself through POW style torture. Time to get out there and explore. Ciao!

... was looking inviting...... I could have done it....... you know,....on all fours......if I had to...... Iquique was, though, a real lovley place. A kind of country and western main street with wooden side walks and old-school houses provide the place with a interesting atique feel. The beach was nice and the people friendly. I only stayed one night before heading to San Pedro desert. "to take a hiding"......how does one spell this???

... there despite only planning on being there for a few. It's a pretty weird place to be but definitely worth the trip out there. Christmas was approaching fast and Chris and I needed to get some things before the shops closed. So we spent the next morning running around the market buying all the little things we needed. Chileans celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve, so Claudio and Claudia left us to spend some time with their ...

... much celebration we saw. The locals decorate their trucks and then load them up with big speakers/amps and people dressed in Santa clothes. They drive around town blasting music and throwing candy at anyone within an arms throw. They did this day and night the entire time we were in Iquique. Once we weren't even really watching them but they threw a big wad of candy at us anyway and yelled Merry Christmas. It was awesome! As with everywhere else we've ...

The dancers wave handkerchiefs above their heads during the dance and these symbolize the feathers of the bird or the rooster's comb. Then there was a group, well it may have been the same group, who did a traditional Polynesian style dance ...
