... after 10am from a dock on the Neva just next to the Hermitage. As the boat left the dock and turned around, you get a great view of both banks of the Neva. While the boat had plenty of seats, I preferred to stand by the open doorway to take photos and to feel the sea air in my hair.

Much of the palace is not original as it was destroyed by the nazis during the war (we saw photos of the devastation) but due to detailed photos and original plans being available, most of it has now been restored to its previous splendour.
