Good nightlife, loads of tourists, nice people. Rooms had en-suites which was good and they put on bbqs at night for super cheap which comes with a beer so can't complain.

Cheap through a good deal with "stray"-bus. Clean and nice. Never spent much time in there though. Always out exploring the region. So don't know about kitchen facilities or lounge area. Pool and spa at hostel. Internet available at cost. Very helpful staff.
I'd go back if I'm ever in Paihia again.

    A Great Atmosphere

Base is known for being the place where a younger crowd gets rowdy, so I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived to find it was a pretty laid back kind of place.

The facilities are good and clean, with little mini kitchen areas in the rooms and en suite bathrooms in all the dorms which is always a good thing. The pool and hot tub also looked clean but I didnt use them.

Staff were friendly and the on site bar was very good value, as was the $12 bbq they put on each night.

I would stay here again, but if you are looking for a quiet hostel this is probably not the best choice... the best part about this hostel is the fact you can walk to the beach in less than 2 minutes :)

The flight to Auckland was longer than I'd thought it would be and bumpier. Due to the weather front that had moved in there was a fair amount of turbulence but apart from that it was fine. I got to fly on another Emirates aiaAdsarbus which was quite fun, they are literally huge. When we arrived I was surprised at how tight customs is to get into …

Started the bus tour! Got picked up from Auckland at 7am, it was rainy and miserable! Met Laura on the bus who is a nurse from Wales. Drove up to Paihia, the Bay of Islands, spectacular scenery all the way here and the weather improved as we travelled further north. Have booked a boat trip for tomorrow where we might get the chance to swim with …

Another early start for our Hole in the Rock cruise today. I've paid to swim with dolphins but soon regret my decision as the weather is miserable and the water temperature is really cold :-/ We cruise around the islands for the morning but don't spot a single dolphin which is really disappointing. I also start to feel very seasick! We can't sail …

    Day 20

A travel blog entry by becky_whitmore on Sep 09, 2014

Another early start for our day trip to Cape Reinga today, which is the northernmost point of New Zealand. En route I discover a dislike for some of our new passengers, one in particular who I found to be rude, arrogant and loud, and I did not appreciate their racist comment about our lovely driver. We will not be friends. We had a wander around …

    Day 19

A travel blog entry by becky_whitmore on Sep 08, 2014

Feeling very tired today after an awful nights sleep and an early start. We get to Paihia in the Bay of Islands around lunchtime. I had booked to skydive in the afternoon but decided against it as I felt too unwell, so had a lazy day instead. Me, Adam, Matt and Tash (who we met on the bus today) went for a short walk which was nice, Adam told me …
