I arrived in Brisbane to two of my friends, Martin and Roisin. They were staying in Base working for accommodation, so they new the staff at there and got on great with them! Gradually got to know them all and started working for accommodation myself, which eventually ended up to me working as paid staff doing house keeping! Stayed there for 3months, living, working and going out down under. Best 3 months, had so much fun as we had a little family with everyone living there !!

My friend accompanied me to Brisbane to see the Matisse exhibition; I am a backpacker and she is a four-star, must-have-hairdryer girl so this was a real experience for her. She was initially shocked at the smell in the baggage room where we stowed our bags until 2pm check-in, and also at the size of our tiny single rooms, but by the time we checked out 2 nights later she was won over to my way of travelling (mostly). We spent only the nights in our rooms so the size was irrelevant - there was room for a single bed, bedside table and large suitcase, a hook on the wall for a towel and secure locks. The building is heritage listed and divine, the shower block cleaned twice daily, the kitchen massive and well-set-out, and there's a rooftop area for chilling out with a beer or two, complete with loungers and a barbeque. It is directly opposite Central Station and close to the bus station at King George Square, and the staff were friendly and helpful even though they were getting hammered by a crowd of people checking in for a festival. The lounge/tele watching area was smelly and grungey. My friend was able to borrow a hairdryer for a $20 deposit, which was returned when she gave it back. All in all, adequate accommodations in a gorgeous old building, in an excellent and central location.

Located in an old classic Queensland building, centrally located in Brisbane, this place is packed to the max. Rooms are small and moldy, can be noisy at night. The pub downstairs have drinking nights every night of the week, good or bad, depending on your taste.

The people working here either don't give a damn about you, or they are too busy yelling at others while you wait for your turn.

Basically if you are looking for a S#@T Hole to crash a few days, this is your place.

Tacky souvenirs and a cinema date

We arrived in Brisbane late at Base hostel (can't believe this is the last time) had some food then got an early night.
Our last full day in Australia was dedicated to souvenir shopping. We went to all of the tacky souvenir shops selling everything from tea towels to kangaroo testicles. With our stereotypical purchases in tow, we decided for …

We are loving Brisbane! We've had another great couple of days. It's 10pm here right now, and we've not long got back from the rugby: Queensland against the Brumbies. Despite Queensland losing 29-0, it was a good match and we really enjoyed watching the game, and having a few beers each. It's now 10pm, so only 3 hours until the Leicester game is on …

It's 13.11 and we are on our way to Brisbane, leaving the lovely Surfers Paradise. We're slightly annoyed seeing as we aren't on a Greyhound bus, which is what we paid for, and are instead on a small white bus with no wifi or usb socket - but hey ho, the bus is only 1 hour long. We've really enjoyed our few days in Surfers Paradise, they have been …

Knowing I had to be up early, I went to bed just after 10... Surprise, surprise, I didn't sleep a wink! So 2 hours later I got up, got myself ready, crammed the last few bits and pieces into my already overfull rucksack and left home about 1am... So strange knowing I won't be going back there again for the best part of this year.

    The …
