After Kaikoura, we continued north towards Abel Tasman. The scenery on our way there was very nice. We stopped at Kekerengu for a breakfast, as suggested by the owner of Beaconstone Backpackers and it is indeed a very lovely place. We continued to Blenheim, where we visited the Aviation Museum, which had a one year anniversary, so they celebrated …
Onward to Te Anau
The drive between Queenstown and Te Anau goes through several environments. We had lake and mountain views out of town, then we drove into the dry lands over hills covered with clumps of red grass.
We stopped on a farm to buy produce at the "Vege Shed" where Kip fed the sheep. They still had their big winter coats on. We bought some fresh …
Going, Going, Ooops
A bit of frustration in the wind here in New Zealand for us travellers. The past few days have been a comedy of errors it seems. After leaving the Dunedin area, we headed down to the Catlins which is the southernmost part of New Zealand. We had planned on staying 3 nights at a backpacker hostel that was situated just off a wide crescent beach. …
Te Anau
How unfair; when we got up this morning to leave for Te Anau, the sun was shining and shining very hard! Wish we'd had that kind of weather yesterday.
Anyway; before leaving Invercargill, we made a stop at E. Hayes & Son which is a hardware store that displays all sorts of Burt Munro items. For those of you who haven't seen "The …
Our 1 week anniversary: a cruise is in order!
By morning, the Malaysian couple was already off to breakfast by the time we got up, so we could take our time getting ready. By the time we were going out for our breakfast, they were already taking off for their next destination. Today we would switch to our own double room, so we packed up our bags in order not to have to take them …

TravelPod Member ReviewsBarnyard Backpackers Te Anau
I wasn't expecting much from the name and price of $70. However, we VERY pleasantly surprised as we found hobbit like homes built into the side of a large hill over looking the mountain range. We arrived just in time for sunset which was unbelievable with the mountain range and country land views. A very nice family runs this establishment. The young girl (early 20's maybe) who checked us in told us a little bit about the history of her dad building every unit by himself with little help. The barnyard name I think came from converting a barnyard into what is now the main reception area, kitchen, internet, sitting lounge, etc. We went into our room after check in and were again, pleasantly surprised. It was so cozy and country farm like inside. This was one of our favorite places to stay for a very reasonable price.
