When Adrian and I were planning on meeting up in Rome and traveling together for the two weeks leading up to Oktoberfest, the main goal was to move quickly and spend as little time as possible in each place because we knew Italy and Switzerland would mutilate our wallets (not that we'd cheapen our experience anywhere or anything like that, we just wouldn't linger in places that would be a money drain). Even so, we booked ahead of time three nights in Rome because we (at least I) would be gett...
Rome, Italy danblankHi All, I'll do a double entry tonight cos I couldn't get internet access for a while. Today we got up and caught the bus straight to the Rome train station. We bought tickets to Perugia in Umbria. It is a medieval town built into the side of a hill and so beatuiful that the few photos I took don't do it justice. You can just imagine the Romans marching through the streets. We had tea at a place called Il Padrino (the Godfather) and ended up costing 50 euro (about 80 bucks!). Neill had been g...
Perugia, Italy johnnygHi Everyone, So, when in Rome...over-use that joke A LOT!!!! I have certainly been following that rule! Although the train strike was officially over on the day of our departure from La Spezia and the Cinque Terre area (which, by the way, was THE MOST AMAZING PLACE I have been in my life!), the trains, true to Italian form, took their dear sweet time getting us from place to place. We went on the amazing hike in Cinque Terre between 3 of the 5 towns, and we ended up talking to two guys from t...
Rome, Italy mcewenmckennaSo am writing this in Florence, but these entry is actually for Rome. Rome was a lot of fun. The first night we were there was absolutely terrible though. Right now we think of it as an adventure, but at the time all i wanted to do was curl up with the nearest bum and cry myself to sleep (the nearest bum was about half a foot away). We took the train out of the cinque terre a day early because of a train strike, and we arrived in Rome at 1030 at night without a place to stay. We were confiden...

Rome, Venice, Italy romanuck_Greetings from ROME! We finally arrived yesterday, Wednesday the 21st, at around 230 pm. All of our travel went fairly smoothly, though the overnight flying really took it out of us, energywise. Also, when we got to Copenhagen, we realized that our connecting flight was not yet listed on the departure monitors because it was not for another 2 and a half hours... not wanting to head in the wrong direction, we hung out near the gate where we arrived and waited (for an hour) to find our gate. Wh...
Rome, Lazio, Italy sarahbraswellAfter a superb day the day before in Rome, we were up early to see all that we didn't see the day before. This mainly meant ancient Rome. We made a thing the day before (Monday) about not setting our eyes on the Colosseum at all. We wanted to leave it for Tuesday. So we were up early, and at the same time everyone else seemed to be heading to work, we were heading to one the sights I had been waiting a long time to see. The Colosseum! We walked over from out central hostel to the Colosseum an...
Rome, Italy stevea... tried the italian beer which was pretty good. After
dinner I headed back to the hostel and grabbed a map to plan my
siteseeing journey for tommorow. There is so much to see in Rome and I
really only have a day and a half so I have to be efficient. After
planning the next day I headed down to the bar for a few drinks. Of
course I met more Aussies and a girl from Victoria that just graduated

... beginning to remember what it is like to travel with Carmella. Hours later, we reckoned that we must have walked 100 miles so all gelato was forgiven. We climbed up the endless stairs (no way we were getting into the dodgy lift) and retired to our 5th floor room. We reasoned that the only way we could afford to pig out this way was to be completely self-propelled. No elevator, metro or bus for us. It was pure feet all the way, gelato and pizza in hand. Today I am grateful for reunions.
Roma, Italy whereshegoes... road running west to Volterra. As we crested a hill: a prison. In the middle of nowhere, this vast modern prison looked very hot and forbidding. Only a few prisoners were playing on a very bare and worn soccer field. It was now extremely hot. The vinyards and sunflower fields give way to brown hills, probably of wheat or corn, and I suddenly realise that Voltera stands on top of a hill at the southern end of the plain that stretches south from Lucca and Piza. Later, we ...
