Still Miles to Go - Night 8

During the night a warm wind howled and by morning it was noticeably cooler and there were even clouds in the sky. I hadn't seen a cloud since the day I landed. The flies had blown in as well. Though they had been bothersome during the first part of the week, they were poised to reach epic levels of annoyance today. Luckily by 9 am we had progressed our cat's claw cutting up to the junction of the two creeks, our decided upon goal. Back to the ranch for our morning tea break (in which I never...

The Sunshine State!

We flew up to Brisbane and got a transfer to our hostel. We were really disappointed with the hostel as it was in a rough looking area and was really run down. We couldn’t find anyone working there to check us in so had to wait for about 45 minutes for someone to turn up. One of the guys in our dorm told us that he had his bag stolen by local junkies a few days ago and to top it all off the lock on the door didn’t work. We locked our bags up and headed out to get away from the pla...

Some interesting folks...

Oopsie, sorry haven't updated in a while... I have decided to take this opportunity to tell you about a couple of interesting people that we shared a room with in Brisbane. As the hostel in Sydney was a bit rowdier than we probably would have liked, we decided to opt for a hostel that scored a little bit lower on the 'fun' scale (haha, we know, we're boring old *****. Either that or not drunken chavs:-)) This worked out much better for us as we were only woken up in the middle of the night ab...

New Years

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!!! In a few words: Beach, throwing shapes and fireworks! What else do you need?? It turned out to be a very good night, after the intial dissapointment with the atmosphere of Christmas our hopes weren't held too high for new year however we went back to the South Bank and it was packed!! more so than at Christmas, they had a little disco going on where we threw the afore mentioned shapes! (the story behind throwing shapes is not an interesting one:We met a couple cal...

Bye Bye Brisbane!!

Ok sorry for the delay folks! This was our last day in Brisbane and altho we had 12 days there we realised we hadnt really strayed past the beach!! So we ventured out to see a little bit more! We ended up at the museums (about 5 within 2mins of each other! and actually on 10mins from the beach!) But Hey! we were still embracing culture! As you can see from the photos it was mainly art museums, Steve wasn't too impressed, but i however happen to be a fan of the big pears! Speaking of big thing...

CRIKEY!....It's a ripper!

Apologies for the delay, its all been busy busy busy!!! :) Well CRIKEY indeed! What an unbelivably awesome place!!! Best zoo ever and i wouldn't care if i never got to go to another zoo again!! The good thing about it is that it doesn't overwhelm you with lots of strange species of animals, that you don't really care about seeing. The majority of the animals featured are from Australia. You do however get overwhelmed by the ongoing 'presence' of Steve Irwin (there is no other way to put it!) ...

Resting in Mt. Isa.

Resting in Mt. Isa. Stop there because we needed some rest after 26 hours bus drive. I also bought a hat.

So maybe i was a bit ******* Brisbane. After nearly a month here I've had a good look and theres a lot to like. I've included pictures that illustrate how impressive it looks at night but during the day is rather unsightly. look out for the light grey building that has a charcoal coloured splodge lumped on top of it. It also has a number of motorways that run right through the city which is a little unusual. On the plus side it has some nice green areas, the southbank is good to stroll around...

Brisbane

The main city of Brisbane is a little way inland and so our hostel was nowhere near the coast, so the first thing we did was head into the city centre and hit the beach! The cleverly man-made Streets Beach ( named and sponsored by the ice cream company known as Walls in the UK) is situated beside the Brisbane river in the South Bank Parklands area. The imported soft white sand forming the beach and the large, sand bottomed swimming pool at its edge are surprisingly popular with tourists, fami...

Setting out on the yellow brick road to Narnia?

... it was but only slightly and the chice of beer was strangely lacking. One of the fridge doors appeard to go through into a huge room behind all the other fridge doors, it looked a bit scary so I didn't go in. Then we drank the beers and played cards but I think I merged the rules from several games which was confusing. Australia Day

... about 45 minutes of sitting on the uncomfortable patch of grass with screaming kids all around we abandoned our cause and got dinner instead. There were fireworks later in the evening, but after the show in Sydney, nothing could have compared, so we decided to pack it up and head back home. It wasn't the traditional Australia Day experience, but I did see more Aussie flags in one place than ever before and probably ever ...
