Woke up ar 6:45 for some reason had a shower and went for a wander around Calais on my own was really nice with the sun rising so i decided to take a few photos and got a croissant for breakfast. Went back to the hotel for a bit then went out to get tickets for the train to Paris. The first train was a double decker thing and being uneducated in suc...

Bad case of tourist burnout in Paris

Paris, the city with a million names and cliches, and not all of them friendly. We came in without a booking (as ever) to one of the most notoriously booked out cities in europe. But much without effort we walked into the first hostel (Blue Planet) and found ourselves beds (seperate dorms, but one night can't hurt). We should have known that easy to get into means horrible service & rude management, so we packed up our things the next morning and found a much better hostel (Hostel Jules F...

Today after we got our great Museum Passes, we took a long train ride out to spend the day at Versailles. We toured the state apartments, king and queen's suites, and the Hall of Mirrors first, then headed out the gardens and the Grand and Petit Trianon. I wanted to see the Petit de Trianon (which is a 30 minute walk from the palace chateau) the most since Louis built it for Marie Antoinette and she was the one who decorated it's lavish interiors. She had a picturesque landscape filled in aro...

Bad weather and Bon Jour Paris

Bad weather set in overnight in Brugge and all along the coast. So we decided to make lemonade out of lemons and bypass the trip to the coast and ocean and head on to Pairs (some lemons, huh?) after arriving in Paris, still raining on us we made the quickest dash possible and headed for the nearest hotel. After dropping our bags we left straight for the Eiffel Tower grabbing kabaps and frites (kabobs and fries in the US) on the way! The anticipation set in, my palms sweating, my knees weak as...

Paris 2

Okay, sit back and buckle your seat belts . . . We started off the morning bright and early by visiting La Defense. Next was the Arc de Triomphe and the amazing traffic circle of mayhem around it. The arc is overwhelming in size and the grave and eternal flame that is lit below the monument for the unknown soldier of the war is very moving. You should all be proud, I hiked the spiral staircases all the way to the top and even hung over the edge! But the traffic circle below where 12 main axis...

Okay, we`ll slow it down a bit today. We hopped a couple a trains out of town to Poissy, a suburb of Paris and home to Le Corbusier`s Villa Savoy. At best described, Villas Savoy is tourism at it`s very best. What I have failed to tell you at this point, is that Paris was not exactly what I had expected. I didn`t expect so many other tourist to want to see the same things I did, which equaled more people than I had expected. Also the text books of college conveniently leave out the hundreds o...

Je ne parle pas français, désolé.

After the first of many 'continental style breakfasts' we all jumped onto the bus rugged up and ready for a day exploring all that Paris could offer us. It seemed quite early when we got into the centre of Paris, and the sun was only just rising, it was in fact after 9am. Once we reached the heart of Paris, we were dropped off by the bus and left to explore for the day. The only restraint, we had to be back at the hotel by 6.30pm, but that was more than 9 hours ...

THE Villa Savoy And The Palace of Versailles !!

... again the unofficial capital city of France from March 1871 (French government takes refuge in Versailles due to the insurrection of the Paris Commune) until November 1879 (newly elected left-wing republicans relocate government and parliament to Paris). Versailles is located 17.1 km (10.6 miles) west-southwest from the center of Paris (as the crow flies). The city sits on an elevated plateau, 130 to 140 meters (425 to 460 ft) above sea-level (whereas the altitude of the ...
