Athens has a LOT to offer, but there is so much more to see and hundreds of islands to explore. I don't have enough time this trip to make it to all the islands of my choice(I will DEFINITELY be returning!), but I did go for the day to Aegina on Wednesday. My Canadian friends Hillary and Melissa met me and we made our way down to the ferry at Pareus. Of course, there was supposedly a strike that day of the transportation workers, but it didn't really effect our travels, metros and ferries wer...
Athens, Attica, Greece ajohnsonI can not believe that my time in Europe is over, but I leave this afternoon for Egypt!! Greece has been a really nice last stop. My Grammy and Grampy, who usually eat 2 BIG tomatoes between them at dinner would be so proud of all the tomato and cucumber salads I have come to love here in Athens! And my sister would be disgusted! :-) I am really looking forward to being led for a bit by someone else on my 15 day tour in Egypt. It will be great and hopefully a nice way to relax and enjoy a tot...
Athens, Attica, Greece ajohnsonWe caught a flight down to Athens as it is a bit far to train it. Finally we found some hot weather and it was time to break out the singlets and shorts. The first day in Athens we did a walking tour of the city which was good. I didn't do one last time i was here so it was good to hear some of the history about the place. We also found the best gyros place (and cheap to!) just around the corner from the hostel and so this is where we ate for the next couple of days. The guy there recognised ...
Athens, Attica, Greece alanna.hollowayATHENS IS AMAZING. I am a little fatigued right now so I'm not going to write much, but we have spent the past two days in Greece and it has been absolutely wonderful. The Acropolis is the most amazing place I have ever seen, we spent hours there. I will write so much more later - but now I just wanted to let everyone know that we are safe in Athens... and in a few hours Amanda and I are getting on a ferry to the island Paros, and spending the night there at the Apollon Hotel (http://www.hote...
Athens, Attica, Greece angelatickleThe gothic tour of the city was awesome. We got a history of the city and many of the buildings relating to Roman royalty, religion, and gothic architecture. We also stumbled an acoustic session of six guitarist of various ages playing Blue Suade Shoes and Nothing Else Matters, which sounded perfect. It was kind of a lazy day in the city. We just had a few beers and watched a few soccer matches. We flew to Athens at got here at about 2 am and slept in the airport until around 6. That was fun....
Athens, Greece aubreyamericayesterday we spent the day wandering around the city, checking out all the abcient ruins. it is amazing to see how much is still left here. we have a great view of the acropolis which lies high in the sky nearby. theatres, bathouses, agoras, and temples...all are scattered all throughout the modern city. so many statues still do well preserved. the parthenon sits at the top of the acropolis, overlooking the rest of the city. although the weather has been chilly and wet, the history has been g...
Athens, Greece aubreyamericaClick for my pictures of Athens David's pictures of Athens I have been trying to write this entry for a while now, but couldn't quite bring myself to do it. It was almost as if I felt that if I write it down it will somehow dissipate the surrealness of this trip, which remains part of the magic for me. This is a story of two best friends, on the vacation of a lifetime to Greece, in the middle of my third term at Oxford. It was a six-day long weekend, if you will. We began so early in the morn...
Athens, Greece bebraudWoo hoo! It's vacation time! I've been looking forward to the next two weeks for a few months now...and the day has finally arrived. The plan is as follows....fly to Athens on 23-March (via Doha) and meet my friend Step from the States. Spend a couple days in Athens and then ferry to Mykonos in the Greek Islands. Spend a few days there then ferry to Kusadasi Turkey for a few days exploring the sites around Kusadasi (namely Ephesus and Pamukkale). Bus up to Istanbul and wrap up the trip with 4...
Athens, Attica, Greece bwulzG'Day, Arrived in Athens after a pretty bad overnight ferry, they seem to lack the understanding that when people want to sleep they would mind the lights to be dimmed a little and the Air Conditioning to be turned off Freezing... But it was all good by the time I arrived at my Hostel at the bright early hour of 6 am, I had a couch and free breakfast. I could tell already that the Hostel was going to be awesome, its one of the top 10 in the world. Called Athens Backpackers, definitely the onl...
Athens, Greece chrismalI took a flight from Palermo, Sicily to Athens, Greece. Athens was underwhelming as well. Pretty dirty and I found the food to be sub-par. However, they did have one delicious dish . . . the gyro. It is like a Kebab, only 5 times better. Plus is only about 2.50 American dollars.
