    ... a lot of history and the buildings are old. Its interesting to note that in spite of the city having been severely bombed by the allies during the war, the three cathedrals, which sport tall spires, were never hit or damaged. Must be a divine force at work.

    ... So we ended up turning around and having to negotiate a complicated diversion.

    We arrived at Hamburg at around 2.00 where we checked into the luxurious four star Maddison Hotel which had been booked for us by my business associates from DVA. Pure luxury after our bus. Our bus has a total of 4.5 square meters of living space, now we were thrown into 35 square meters. We nearly lost each other.

    An early start following sneaked in daddy cuddles! A quick take down, swift showers and sarnies thrown together before leaving our beloved Dokkum for Germany. A brisk 240 miles thanks to German efficiency! The guide book told us there are no real speed limits on much of the autobahnen..... It did not lie!! We arrived at a great little site on the Elba River in a little place called Stove, just South East of Hamburg ...

    ... was firebombed during WW2. On July 23, 1943, a firestorm developed because of the Allied bombing, destroying 8 sq. miles and killing 42,000 people. We stopped at St. Nicholas church, which was briefly the tallest building in the world. It was destroyed in the firestorm and only the steeple remains.


    We returned to the ship, went dancing, finished packing and had our last dinner aboard the Symphony.
