Bye, bye Fiji

It is my third and final day in Fiji and I'm ready for New Zealand!! I could live without the humidity and over 150 (yes, I counted!) mosquito bites but it was a blast to snorkel and be on the water. Day 1 - My first snorkeling experience was just off the beach and I could swim to it. My reaction to the drop-off area surprised me - I was scared even though I'd remained right near the top of the water the entire time previous to the drop-off. I slowly got my courage up and sneaked out over it ...

Bula, Bula - Night 148

12:15 local time an Air Pacific Boeing 737-300 rumbles down the tarmac at Brisbane International Airport bound for Nadi, Fiji thus ending the passenger in seat 32A's time in Land Down Under. As we lift through the clouds I look back at the verdant landscape of Moreton Island and wondered silently to myself if I will ever return to this place. The answer... I honestly don't know. This uncertainty in life is both strangely upsetting and spiritually liberating at the same time. Air Pacific is th...

The Blue Lagoon - Night 149

Promptly arriving at 7am, the shuttle bus was filled with passengers anxious to get off the mainland and out into the small islands west of Viti Levu. I had booked a six-day/five night package visiting two island sand offering two nights on a boat. The first five day would be spent in the Yasawa Islands with a day sailing adventure to the Mamanucas at the end of the trip. For the first two nights I'm booked at the Sunrise Resort on Nanuya Lailai Island, the absolute last stop on the boat rout...

Cave Diving - Night 150

Heavy, tropical rain fell all through the night. In my infinite wisdom I left both my towels and my swimming trunks out on the line. Even with the rain and the nets that we slept underneath, the mosquitoes still had a field day on my feet and ankles. Breakfast consisted primarily of Fijian sweet bread and various fruits and melons. On the agenda for the morning was a trip out to some unnamed caves. The 45-minute ride, each way, was provided by Joe's Water Taxi. Their name itself certainly off...

Sailing the Mamanucas - Night 154

I have a strange yearning for 7-Up. Seriously, this is what I thought when I woke up today. I had been fiending bacon as well, but the Bounty Island staff delivered in the form of an immense breakfast buffet. The only thing missing was the funny guy in a hat cooking made-to-order omelets. The two Dutch girls and I had a sailing trip planned for the today and our transfer catamaran arrived at 9:30 to take us to Mana Island for a transfer to the Seaspray, the supposedly legendary sailboat that ...

Still learning "Fiji Time"

The past few days have been great. I have been able to snorkel out on Korolevu island, an island about 5 minute boat ride from Garden Island Resort which is surrounded by coral. Having only snorkeled lakes, this is a great change in scenery! I took pictures with a film underwater camera, we will see how they turn out. I ended up being trapped in a shallow bit surrounded by coral at one point. However interesting and nice it was a little treacherous getting out. So of course being me, I scrape...

Garden of the Sleeping Giant

So maybe I was a little quick to judge Aquarius Fiji the other night. It isn't completely terrible but in comparing it to the other places I have been, it is nowhere close. Even for a hostel. It feels really small since it is one of a bunch on the beach strip. The scenery, be it beautiful, I believe I was spoiled in Taveuni with the extreme beauty and watching the mountains across the ocean every day. The food here at Aquarius is decent although twice (for the only two meals I have had, and w...

Nadi, Viti Levu

We arrived at Nadi on Feb. 5th 2005. We stayed at teh Aquarius Hotel. It is in front of the ocean and has a very nice pool. We went for a walk on the main street at Nadi centre. It looks like downtown Porlamar, Margarita Island. We had lunch (Fish) with a very nice Fijian lady Sarah. Llegamos a Nadi el 5 de feb. 2005. Nos quedamos en el Hotel Aquarius. Queda al frente del mar y tiene una buena piscina. Fuimos a caminar por el centro de Nadi. Parece el centro de Porlamar en Margarita. Almorzam...

Yasawa Islands

Naviti is one of the biggest islands in the Yasawa group, but you wouldn't notice. it is almost as peaceful and quiet as the last two islands that we went to. Again, the setting was perfect, the resort was in a large sandy bay which meant the sea was calm-but a little too shallow to swim in. However that didn't matter, as they had a pool!!! Also, forgot to mention but the last 2 resorts had saltwater showers-which is really not great, but when we got here we were actually delighted to find th...

More Sun, Sea, Sand and Fiji Bitter!

The plane landed at around 8:30am following a fuel stop in Samoa. Arriving in Nadi, Viti Levu, as passengers we were greeted by a live quartet complete with ukelale (spelling?), flowers and guitars (the Bula song) - which was surprising so early in the morning. I met up with a booking agent and made plans for my first few days, which saw me checked into the Aquarius Pacific Hotel. The Hotels in Fiji often double as hostels as they have dorm beds (8 pounds per night) also. I tucked into a full...
