KL- Caves, Clubs, and Chinatown

Kuala Lumpur is a pretty interesting city- big, dirty and trafficky, but full of culture. Malaysia is an Islamic state, which means that they follow Islamic law and call the prayers over city-wide intercoms. It's an interesting sight and something I'm totally not used to. The Batu Caves were probably the highlight of this trip. The caves are naturally carved out of hillsides and go high up into the rocks. A Hindu temple sits inside the main cave. To get to the temple, you have to climb up 272...

Chapter 43: Deja-view

Yeah, I've been slack again. I did manage to get some new photos up recently, though, so take a peek at the April/May entries if you're interested. Anyway, I've got a lot of ground to cover with this entry, so I'll just jump in: On Saturday (June 26) Jonas and I took the ferry from Big Buddha Beach (so-named for the giant gold Buddha statue perched nearby) on Koh Samui to Had Rin, the backpacker mecca on Koh Phangan. The small-but-vibrant town of Had Rin is spread out over a narrow peninsula,...

The Twin Towers of Muddy Waters

Surely, after our first Malaysian bus ride had been so uncharacteristically bad, our second would be up to par and astound us with the wonders of modern bus transport? That was our hope as we, along with only about twenty others, hopped on the 10:30 bus to Kuala Lumpur. Again we were unimpressed by the "décor": torn seats adorned with miscellaneous stains, thirty year old curtains covered in dust, and filthy floors that appeared to have been mopped last in 1982. But, we'd always been told not...

The Final Leg

We were both eager to leave Singapore and get back to Kuala Lumpur, so we got up earlyish and checked out of our room. In front of the hotel, we ran into Geert, a fellow member of Team Awesome from Uncle Tan's -- small world. We ran around, trying to ensure that the new phone had a proper warranty (they said it did, in the end, it didn't, which proved to be a problem) and then stopping for lunch at our new favorite Indian spot. We made it to the bus station at a reasonable hour, but the borde...

Kuala Lumpur Round Two - Tennis Fun

We arrived back in Kuala Lumpur on the 30th September, thankfully missing any impact of the earthquake from Indonesia and found ourselves a hostel in the city. Coming back to somewhere we recognised was quite nice and being able to navigate our way around the city without having to work out the signs was very satisfying. After a little treat of a Krispy Kreme donut, we headed to our local cinema before heading back for an early night.

We had tickets booked for the Malaysian Open Tenni...

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Got to Kuala Lumpur (or KL as everyone calls it) at around 4pm last Friday afternoon. We checked into the Lavender Lodge which is a lovely guesthouse in the Golden Triangle area of the city after talking to a chap from the guesthouse decided to go straight up the Menara KL (or Kuala Lumpur Communications Tower). What I didn't realise when I was coming to KL was that the Menara KL is only slightly shorter than the Petronas Towers (KL's main attraction and the worlds tallest building til 2004)....

Kuala Lumpur Revisited (again)

So here we are again. It seems that whenever we are travelling in the most south of Southeast Asia, there is only one choice to come to when you need to revitalize, regroup, and re-supply. Kuala Lumpur provides all of this, plus great food and an endless supply of embassys and cheap flights to help you out with your next move. It's clean, modern, hip, and now it even feels like home. We've come back so many times, that we are even recognized at the local internet cafe and the barber shop. And...

We've left Thailand!

At last,we have left Thailand. 58 days after entering from Laos, countless beaches, of which we returned to the same ones twice on two different islands. Bangkok three times, northern Thailand, two different sets of friends and lots of booze, i think it's fair to say we've "done" Thailand. As we've said before it was a extended holiday destination (this year doesn't really count as a holiday!) and eventually we had to move on which in some ways was quite difficult because we had to get into '...

Air Asia X from Stanstead to KL

... before givibg us back the money. As a result we missed the 6:10 Express but that was OK since there was another one at 6:25 which would get us to the airport in plenty of time.

We were flying back with AirAsiaX - for two reasons, one a very cheap fare and secondly we wanted to spend a few days in KL. We had used AirAsia's Web check-in service and that worked very well - we walked around the long queue to a dedicated ...

Leaving KL, Coming Home

Yes, my last day in Kuala Lumpur! Okay, it wasn't too bad of a place and I had enjoyed myself meeting the people at the hostel and walking around to the tall towers and getting to feel western again drinking fru-fru (as Carly would say) coffee drinks like cappuccinos and frapuccinos and chai tea lattes, etc. But, I was ready to go home. I missed Bali. I had begun to feel so much like Bali was home and that it was just ready to get back there. It's become a part of me and who I am. I got ...
