A lovely hostel in an old colonial house. Well-located in a peaceful area of La Candelaria but avoid walking back alone after dark as the streets are a bit deserted and a few 'characters' come out. Cosy room with stone floor, fireplace and warm duvet. Helpful staff and friendly dogs! Tasty croissants for breakfast.

Alegria's Hostel is a safe and comfortable hostel, albeit quite small and a wee walk up the hill in La Candeleria.

Pros: Very friendly and welcoming staff (even when they only speak Spanish), comfortable beds, fully equipped kitchen, cosy and social,

Cons: there are only 2 bathrooms and they are a bit dingy, no bar or separate social area outside of the kitchen/reception area

I've enjoyed my stay here. I was initially caught off guard by how chilly it stays inside the building (due to the architecture and weather..a bit like Cuzco, Peru) but they provide fluffy comforters AND a poncho! The staff is as helpful as they can be...there is a tourist office a few blocks away which is nice. The location is great...quiet yet central to the barrio.

Alegrias is by no means a party hostel, but it is still quite sociable, which balances it out a bit. It is in a good location (La Candeleria), has free wifi, and a decent kitchen.

Perched at 2,600m, this modern, sophisticated and progressive capital city with an educated and stylish population welcomed us with grace and passion. The elegant colonial architecture in the historic centre of La Candelaria where we stayed is shadowed by the glittering towers of finance in the north but both of these areas look away from the …

The story begins in Bogota Columbia where I finally landed on Thursday after nearly 2 days of travelling to reunite with boyfriend Jake and our friend Bushy who have been travelling through South America for the last 5 weeks together. Long-time friends Katie and Soph had also arranged to meet me in Bogota as our travels happened to cross paths, so …

It was a weird feeling leavng the group and travelling as a twosome....it was also strange leaving behind the craziness in Rio for Bogota. It was surprisingly quiet here.

We never got used to having our lives flash before us when we got on a bus in Colombia. All our bus journeys were the same as our first experience. This did not however stop us from appreciating the beauty of the country side around us (you cant help notice it when you think you might end up being planted into it from your bus). What made these ...
