I may have trapped him in my room as I went to the washroom in the middle of the night. I woke up to his purring/growling.

Homeward bound

Friday 29th We sat in the airport in Abu Dhabi for absolutely hours only to find that our 13.35pm flight was then delayed by another 2 hours so we only left at 15.30, but the flight was very empty and I managed to find myself some free seats and made a lovely bed and slept most of the way. Poor Kev was stuck in 2 chairs but tried his best to sleep. Must say that flying with Ethiyad had its good points - nice planes, nice food and good tv but the stop over in Abu Dhabi is very hectic when comi...

waiting and waiting...time is not the essence

When I landed in Jo'burg it was already getting dark. It was after a leg-numbing 12+ hour flight. I can't even count the number of hours I spend either waiting for a plane, on the plane and waiting for other people to get on the plane anymore. It was just an incredibly body-aching journey that I was glad was finally over. So as I left the terminal, I decided to call my hostel to ensure my pick-up was on its way. "Of course. He will be there in 5 minutes." 5 minutes, 10, 30 and 45 minutes and ...

Into the heart of South Africa...

So here I am in sunny Johannesburg getting ready to leave tomorrow for Hong Kong and the next adventure! To tell the truth I was unsure of South Africa as a destination to start off with, but I have really enjoyed every minute and would love to come back some day. I am very sad to be leaving Africa as a whole and my whole outlook on life and my perceptions of Africa have changed immensely. So my last entry ended in Cape Town two weeks ago (but it seems so much longer to me!) on a very wet and...

Johannesburg

The next day , (19th) I was up ealry ad went down to the post office to send home my malawi chair that I had had on the trucvk the whole trip and completely forgotten about! Then we were all off to the Apartheid museum, which was really interesting and sad. For those who don't know about the aprrtheid (I had never heard of it before coming here), it was the name of the regime the white government imposed in 1948 in S.Africa, separating all races, much like in America, and giving black no righ...

JoBerg Where to Stay

Like - Mbizi Backpackers http://www.mbizi.com/ Dislike - Airport Backpackers Stayed - Airport Backpackers, and Mbizi Backpackers Transportation - free shuttles from Mbizi Well we finished our Bundu Safari, and caught a ride back to Jo'Berg instead of going to Lower Sabie like planned. We arrived and stayed at Airport Backpackers for one night because everyone seems to stay there. It was pretty horrible. We were rescued the next day by Patrick the owner of Mbizi. His hostel is wonderful, in a ...

Airport Backpackers, Johannesburg

We woke up quite a few times during the night as the Airport Backpackers is right next to a motorway and one of the runways at Johannesburg International Airport. We are now on the lookout for a tent with sound insulation. The backpackers had filled up overnight so we met some more travellers during breakfast time. There was quite a bit of dew on the ground and our tent was pretty wet so we hung it out to dry. We packed our bags for the flight and rolled the tent up and wrote some cards and d...

Travelling to Joburg from Lusaka

Woke early, packed up the tent and had toasted cheese, onion and tomato sandwiches for brekkie. Delicious! Evens, our taxi driver from before, picked us up. We had to hand in a gate pass at the hostel gate as security is pretty tight in Lusaka. He drove us to the airport after Doug got 100 000 Kwacha out from the bank. The road out to the airport was in very good condition as Japan was sponsoring good roads in Lusaka. We checked in, paid US$20 departure tax, bought some souvenirs to get rid o...

Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve

... quickly went up. We waited until she fell back to sleep to resume our photo shoot. Our next stop was the enclosure for the wild dogs, which were also snoozing away without a care in the world. Our visit to the cheetah enclosure was not so productive. There were none in sight. Even in the smaller breeding enclosure all we could see were little ears sticking up behind the tall grass. In the general area we saw buffalo and a rhino far in the distance as ...

Moz to South Africa - police and prostitutes

... it is often the most intelligent and seemingly sensible ones that fall victim to their own lust / stupidity. We left the bar at around 2.00am and Mike (large dutch guy) drove the landrover back through Maputo to the hostel. If i hadn't been flat out drunk i would have found the drive back mildly terrifying as opposed to impossibly funny. Don't think we drove on the right side of the road for more than 5 minutes and took to the pavement at several points. This was all hilarious ...
