  • From reading Lonely Planet, I was expecting this place to be like Patong or Tonsai beaches, and so I was pleasantly surprised! No tour/ticket touts, just lots of tour agencies. No girls being sick in the gutter. No fights. No drunken behaviour all over the street. Small, not much to do, but a lagoon, shops, bars, restaurants and beach are …

Day Ninety Two: Australia Never Rains, Right?

Who comes halfway around the world and still doesn't escape the rain? Fraser Island has lived through a six month rain hiatus and yet we were the 'lucky' ones who managed to experience it during a flood. What are the bloody chances. We were picked up bright and early from our Hervey Bay accommodation on Tuesday, hopped on the ferry over to Fraser, …

Agnes Water/Airlie Beach and Whitsundays

We only had one day in Agnes Water, which we were both glad about as there was absolutely nothing to do apart from go to the beach. We didn't really research much about it though so I'm sure we could of found something interesting if we wanted to. Our hostel was really nice though and just before we got on our overnight bus to Airlie Beach, they …

We arrived in Mission Beach and got to our hostel which was much more swish than the last, pool and hammocks & breakfast included, always a bonus! We got the bus down to the "town" which consisted of 5 restaurants/bars (one open) and a souvenir shop! But the beach was lush, we were the only ones on it! Chill out day and then back to the hostel …

Airlie Beach

After an 11 hour bus journey from Cairns, I arrived in a small but very cute town called Airlie Beach. And even the sun was out - for a while! Here, I met Natassia from Reading and three people from Ireland who loved to swear in my hostel. Not far into the first day and arriving at the lagoon, it started raining! Having lost a night's sleep on the …

Not bad. The first 2 nights I was in a 10 bed mixed dorm. Third night (after my sailing trip) I was in an 8 bed female dorm which was much bigger and brighter with an ocean view, but same price as the previous dorm. Full of Europeans. Europeans with tans. Very echoey stairwells and you can always hear the door slamming. Friendly staff.

Extremely friendly staff and lovely people in my dorm. The hostel was right on the water - aptly named - and even had a roof terrace

Overall I was really happy with my stay at this hostel. Reception was exceptionally accommodating when I wanted to change rooms, store luggage and book a tour. AND you get a free nights stay by booking thru them!
