Airlie Beach YHA

We were kicked out of our hostel in Airlie Beach this morning which left us an entire day and evening to wander without purpose around town before catching our all night bus down to 1770 at 11.30pm. We decide to go and play in a bead shop where we get very creative and make ourselves a little reminder of our time in Airlie. So, we thought we would be clever and travel overnight to Airlie Beach. It made sense at the time as none of the buses left Hervey Bay and got into Airlie Beach at a reasonable time, plus we thought it would save on a nights accommodation. Next we headed to the other main attraction along the east coast for a day trip to Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. A ferry ride over took us to the island and we were met our transport for the day, a strange combination of a minibus and a 4 wheel drive. We were in for some rough terrain we were told! The next day we were all up at 7:15am again. We set sail at around 8:30am and basically this day or indeed the morning was spent just getting back to the harbour. On the way back with every one's help we passed another boat called the 'British defender' twice, first on the inside then we pulled out and passed it again on the right.  When we got back to the pier they took a group photo for anyone who wanted to buy it. We are in Queensland and according to Bill Bryson (author of Donw Under), there are more things that will kill you in Queensland than anywhere else in Australia. In Queensland, the height of the box jellyfish season is from October to may. During this time, when the jellyfish come inshore to breed, they render the beaches of the tropics useless to humans. We knew it was going to be a good bus trip down from Townsville when we saw that our old mate Murray was driving! It was a 4 hour trip down. Pretty uneventful. Hello Again, Well, I've completed 4 days in Airlie Beach now and I'm not sitting in Cairns, so I guess it's time for a short update on whats been going on. We arrived in Airlie Beach On Tuesday and we knew immediately that we liked it. The town is only small but has a lovely marina and the feel of a little Mediterranean village. Went sailing on a great big cat, great food, snorkelling, fantatsic beach at Whitehaven sands. lovely spot, Saw hampton islan some of the most exclusive real estate in the world! Chilled out then on upto Cairns, long day on bus.
