The newest country on earth

Just a handful of weeks ago, Montenegrans voted on a referendum proposing separation from the republic of Serbia-Montenegro. Nobody likes hyphenation (especially the person or entity whose appellation comes after the hyphen), so as expected, Montenegro broke away from Serbia and thereby made itself the newest youngest country in the world. (As an editorial aside, we are astounded that the Serbians simply acquiesced peacefully to the accession, given their very recent fighting in the area for ...

Kotors little sibling...

Budva was a 45min bus ride from Kotor, again the main bus stop is not in an obvious place (in relation to the town) so I figured my best option was to walk towards the sea and assume that I can see the (old) town and it was that simple.<br>Budva is also a walled town though it lacks the impressive size and beauty of Kotor, is has it's own charm though sadly most of the shops inside the city walls are fully of overpriced (and extremely garish!!) jewellery ...

... exclaiming, "Wow! This is so cool!" So now that I know that I'm a better writer than Henry Rollins, I feel somewhat better, though still cold. Will I have to go back to the mountains to find a room with heat so I won't freeze to death on the beach? It's tolerable, but I just can't get much work done trying to type under the covers, and that means you I'm talking about. It looks like I will.

What It's Like to Chill with the Most Ruthless Men

... to buy some snacks; there was a small store there. I never felt endangered at any time by anyone. During my stay in Montenegro I walked to the store myself almost daily buying drinks and other items I could enjoy privately in my room at night. I never noticed previously to that evening's walk just how many persons actually were vacationing from Western Europe in Budva the fall 2002 like me. After promenading to the store, upon returning to the hotel, a German man sitting outside the ...

... I'm doing. Those who know me, know situational awareness is not my strong sit, and I am as likely to walk into a wall as through a door. Nonetheless, I complete my explorations and make it down without spraining an ankle or worse, and go in search of a bus to take me home. The bus comes every hour, and I have been told to stand on the road heading out of town to catch it. Unfortunately, these appear to be the first "un-flag-able" buses of my trip and it turns out I am ...

The newest country in the world!

... but I've come to find out that was actually filmed in Czech pretending to be here....We had an amazing meal today at a family restaurant, fresh calamari can't beat that! They use the Euro here (though they are not EU) so looks like budget travel may be a bit more of a challenge, we are staying at the only hostel in the country :) Tomorrow it's time to hit the beach!

Budva, Montenegro

8/7 I arrived in Budva at 12:30 pm. For some reason the last stop of the bus was short of the real bus station so there weren't any people offering rooms. The usual travel information office was on the other side of town so I went in search of a place to stay. I'm hauling around this heavy backpack as I decide what neighborhood might have a good place. I checked several places that had rooms posted but no one was home. I was getting rather frustrated at the wasted time when I ...

... so the buildings themselves are the only sight. I then walked along the coast to find a quiet beach. After the private beaches I actually found a free one that had a few lounge chairs. I finished the Lee Child book which was another excellent thriller from him. Our Croatian tour guide last year told us that Montenegrans are the tallest people in the world. I believe her. The men all look pretty gaunt but typically have 6 pack abs that I would gladly trade for ...

... to the situation by the shrill scream of the victim as her assailant attached himself to her jacket. She couldn't shake the bird loose, and finally one of her companions forcibly pried it off. He then oddly held on to the bird for some time, rather than putting it down. Perhaps he hasn't heard about bird-borne diseases such as avian flu. Well, when he finally released the bird, it was apparent that it was dead. The group then set up some impromptu memorial for the bird, as they ...
