As the car wound its way up the mountainside, there was a noticeable change in temperature. We waved our arms in the damp, cool air as we passed roadside sodas, souvenir shops and fruit markets, many of which were closed for the holiday. Luis told us many local businesses were closed that day, foreshadowing the events of our evening to come.

... is notorious a lengthy one plus the need to travel half way across Costa Rica to San Jose. Even leaving so early, the locals were out and about in the pitch darkness. The ferry left at 6 am and then the sunrise … and yes, it was well worth while getting up this early to capture it from the near empty top deck.

The shuttle dropped us off right at the front door of the airport in Guatemala City, which was nice as it is apparently a very dangerous city (and only about 5% of the daily murders are solved!). ... nice places to look at and our hotel is relatively quiet with a lush garden and it full of hummingbirds so the 'twitchers' amongst us are happy (that's not me btw ). We've already been introduced to the national dish of rice and beans - Gallo Pinto for breakfast, Casado for lunch and pretty much the same for dinner (it tastes better than it looks).
