water water everywhere (again)

We said goodbye to Martyn's sister this morning & set off in the rain again down the lanes of the Lake District. Lots of floods in the road & the bikes made very big bow waves as they charged through. I was very glad my feet were high & dry in Martyn's tank bag.

Took us 2 & half hours riding in lots of driving rain to get to the Christie hospital at Manchester where they ...

At the hotel

Back at the St. Brides Spa Hotel in Saundersfoot.
Unfortunately, winter doesn't make this the best place to stay. It's dark when you are at the hotel, so you don't get the views. And the spa doesn't stay open late enough in the winter. At least I will get to enjoy it over the weekend.
And the walk along the coast - kind of scary in the dark. But you do get to see a bunch of stars and parts of the Milky Way because there isn't much light pollution out here.

... it apparently sprung up on the spot where St David was born.

We are now in Fishgaurd, one of the ports along the west coast of Wales. We're staying in a hostel run by a bit of a local legend, he went off backpacking and didn't return for 20 years - apparently has done and seen it all, even was a taxi driver in mexico for a while! Evidently Fishguard is known at the last village in Great ...

Carew Castle

A pretty well preserved castle.

One of the main towers was closed for some work, so I didn't get to climb everything. And the other tower is reserved for bats.

Did have an interesting little chapel.

Good views of the castle across the water.

... Oakwood. so i tag along i mange to squeeze in all the major rides including one named speed, it start with a drop that send you toward the ground past the vertical line, hard to describe but pretty intense. On sat we go out for a drive to the blue lagoon, small inlet with very clear blue green water, unfortunately its low tide and a bit cloudy so not as spectacular as some of the brochures but very nice none the less.

After the hills, some hills.

Of course, the ideal way to pass the day after a 100km mountain bike ride is to walk up the highest peak in the Beacons, so after a lovely cooked breakfast at the Canal Bridge Café, we loaded up the car then parked at the bottom of Pen y Fan and set off to walk up. It's not that bad a walk, and the views are great: typically Beacons, with big, rolling, grassy hills.

... charge of engineering in Dickies' boatyard in Bangor (where we have stored our boats for years) , dropped everything and came to help. It transpired that the unit had never been sealed properly, so that over the years, the gearbox had filled with sand, salt, shells and all manner of debris, so much so that it eventually refused to move. Several hours later, we had the newly refurbished and rejuvenated ...
