... was located in the historical Candelaria district in the centre of the city. I intially thought this would be one of the more secure areas, but as I learned later, this is not the case and unfortunately tourist focussed crime is on the rise here. Luckily, I emerged unscathed. Apart from my concerns about security in Colombia, my other major worry was my lack of Spanish. This prompted me to stay in an 'Australian run hostel', help me ...

Day 48 -Bogota - Entrepeneurs

... best universities in Latin America there were students everywhere, and we arrived at the Funicar. The Funicar is a railway that rises almost vertically to the top of a mountain that overlooks Bogota. There are two options, the Funicar, or the Telegrifico which is a cable car. We were told that the Funicar was out of action for a few weeks but we could use the cable car. We also noticed that the prices were almost half price on Sundays so we decided to opt out and ...

The First Days

... as other South American countries), Simon Bolivar. When I arrived, there was a demonstration being held in the plaza. I am not sure what it was about, but I did see a sign being carried around that said ¨Bolivar era negro¨ (Bolivar was black.) I do know that Bolivar was the one to create a law that at the time stated that children born to current slaves were born free. Anyway, there was chanting and music thumping loudly- drums, maracas. Very festive for a demonstration.

Journey´s end...

... Like with most establishments of higher learning around the world, a proliferation of cheap drinking dens have mushroomed around their lofty gates. Friday (ok, any) afternoons will see hundreds of Bogota´s privileged sons and daughters roaming the streets, bottles of Club Colombia in hand, whilst rastas in Bob Marley hats coo out of aromatic doorways, waving enormous bags of Colombia´s finest (yup, cheaper than food). I´m living in ...

Bogota

Bogota like Medellin has an air of prosperity about it and, as a result of its many libraries and universities is known as "the Athens of South America". Took a trip out to see the fascinating Cathedral del Sal built deep inside the Zipaquira salt mines, finished by ...

¡Bogota Bogota Bogota!

... We went to the Museo de Oro (the largest gold museum in South America).....it was impressive but there is only so much gold you can look at without feeling jealous (and a little bored) so in the end we left in favour of more Colombian coffee at a café that Gabriel Garcia Marquez (a famous Colombian writer) used to go to. We then spent a lovely afternoon getting lost/exploring the streets of Bogota ...

Bogota, Colombia

... a Bogotan fitness pilgramage of sorts. With the cold I have just caught and the fact that Bogota is at more than 2,500 metres, it was quite a struggle. But also quite a spectacle watching people of all ages and walks of life walking up. Some people do it barefoot and alledgedly some do it on their knees! That I wasn't quite ready for. The views over Bogota from the church were lovely, and the sense of achievement at the top made it all ...

Colombia Landing - Bogota

... than we thought it would be, paint peels from the graffiti walls and rubbish piles in street corners. There are quite a few bars and restaurants but not too many are really attractive, they don't draw you in. A lot of the bars are like caverns, bit like a few I remember from Uni, although here you always need to check the price of the drinks before you purchase as they have a habit of charging way over the odds and you have to argue over the bill afterwards. We are ...

There are also pastry shops and restaurants that are just a few blocks away from the apartment. And a wonderful farmer's market every Sunday about a 5 minute walk away. The apartment and rooms for rent in Bogota is basically located between North ...
