        We finally found an internet place willing to let us use a computer without a Chinese ID card. The map should be up to date now.

        The mountains are smaller but no less steep as we head South. We are in Dali which is an "Old Town". Most of these "old towns" look the same, tons of souvenir stores and restaurants. But if you look hard enough through all the clutter the architecture of these buildings are really ...

        ... see the photos for it) we went into the old town of Dali. it’s a walled town built in the 1300’s but rebuilt numerous times because of earthquakes. It was lovely - lots of cobbled streets, little streams, beautiful buildings (in particular the roofs). We hope to go back tomorrow afternoon and have a proper wander round.

        The hotel we are staying at is in a village about 30 minutes drive from Dali and is a typical Bai family ...

        ... We knew it was 5km out of the old town but decided to walk rather than get a taxi or horse and cart. Aside from the sunburn, it's a good thing we did. The road to the river was lined with fields full of all sorts of crops, including rice of course.
