    ... of the main ancient city area within Dali and that we would find lots of great restaurants and people watching there if we wanted to check it out later that night. Once we had settled into our room a bit we decided to do just that, and as usual we were armed with a particular restaurant that we wanted to try to find thanks to the reviews on TripAdvisor. We knew that the restaurant we were looking for was on “foreigner street” but we weren’t sure ...

    ... wasting any time, we get rid of Dali's map and we go to explore further the local markets, traditionnal Chinese houses, bars, restaurants, art shops, the wonderful Catholic church with its very local style, Dali's mosque, and all the wonderful people around here...

    What a very busy day, enriching but still very exhausting...

    ... cook in the boiling “soup”. Invented apparently by a housewife who got tired of carrying her husband's lunch across the bridge on different plates so threw the lot in together. Personally I'd throw if off the bridge.

    ... and the countryside . Our impressions of the place, particularly the old town were very favourable. The old town streets are narrow and paved with quaint houses, shops, restaurants and hotels on either side. Down the side of some streets, ran sunken streams.

    Dali old city is surrounded by a wall with a gate at each of the cardinal points.
