I can do seafood with eyes and tentacles but this was a little much for me. Jake thought it was delicious, though, and so did a few hostel friends that tried it.

Before dinner, I wasn't feeling too well. Hitting the mountains

... and the air got thinner, we noticed at first a few patches and then fields of snow as the temperature plummeted. Almost as suddenly, the architecture changed towards a more Tibetan style and the cows turned into yak like beasts... It was certainly a departure from the rest of Yunnan, and somewhat justified our decision to make the trip. As a side note, when we hit the snow line, my ipod shuddered and breathed what appeared to be ...

... is entirely different. The sheer scale of the peaks of the Himalayas is breathtaking-being in the presence of the highest peaks on earth is something special. But there's more: those mountains inspire spirituality, with Tibetans being among the most devout people on the planet. What keeps me going back is the special nature of the Tibetans-who appear near-mythical to me because their logic appears to run counter to everything in the West. They are not so ...

... to visit. The major sight in Shangri-la is a huge Tibetan monastery located just outside the new part of town. We biked there one morning and were amazed by the beauty of the place. Over 600 monks currently live there, mostly in a sprawling little town at the base. To reach the monastery one has to climb a huge, steep staircase up to the golden-roofed buildings at the top. Inside there were a series of rooms containing ...

Aufgrund der Saison ist aber im Moment wenig los. Die Architektur hier ist noch fast typischer tibetanisch als in Tibet, es gibt auch das bedeutendste tibetanische Kloster suedoestlich von Tibet (mit 600 Moenchen). Morgen frueh ...

... picture. Most often, in broken English, they thanked me and wished me well. Well, I did make it to the top and waited for my cousin and his wife to arrive. While I was waiting the sun came out, the clouds cleared from around the top of the pick reflecting off the glaciers coming down from the top. What a site. Non-stop pictures. And more requests to pose with the Chinese tourists. I finally started saying "No more." I got a Gold medal engraved with my name ...

Tiger Leaping Gorge

... this time. The next path looked very menacing indeed. From the bottom it didnt look like we could even walk it, we though we would have to do it on our hands and knees but it was just the perspective throwing us off corse. The path was carved out of the mountain to form a c shaped tunnel with hugged the cliff as it worked its way round into the gorge. The path was about 1 m wide and had a sheer drop to the right which plumeted straight down to the river, it was the ...

... snow mountains, but he advised us that he had just come back from a trip there with some other guests and the road was blocked by snow. He showed us the digital photos he had taken - snow covering the road, and at some stages - landslides! The thought of the adventure sounded good to Glenn, but we would need a few more days with good weather for the buses to make the trip again - time that we didn't have. The next day was cold. Icy cold. And also cloudy, so the sun didn't warm ...
