The Land of All Things Ancient

... that Apollo slew the Python, taking over the area from the mother of the gods. (And as I mentioned earlier, pilgrims cleansed themselves here before seeing the oracle.) The Sanctuary of Athena was pretty impressive too. It’s just a temple area where Athena was worshipped (c. 380 B.C.) but because its columns were reconstructed, it looks a lot like it would have looked back in the day. Our last site in Delphi was the practice field. We were allowed to walk on them, so that ...

A Grueling Travel Story

... We tried to communicate with him as best we could and he just motioned for us to hop on the bus. We did as he said. After about ten minutes, the bus got to a stop where everyone who was on the bus got off. We then did too, figuring we were at the bus terminal. But of course we weren’t. We were at another train station, just on the other side of town. We then went on a mission asking people where the bus terminal was. Finally one man told us, “ ...

Delightful Delphi

... going to be fruitful and/or safe. From the sounds of it there was a noxious hallucinogenic vapour released from a crevice in the rocks which caused the oracles to speak in tongues and incidentally shortened their lives. There was process which those seeking advice, called consultants – rather the reverse of what this word means today – had to go through and this inevitably involved the payment of money or the donation of a goods as well as the ...

A warrior is home...

... Xerxes' "elite fighters." Clever tactics by the Spartans and Greeks foiled this second attempt on the first day of battle.

Day 2: Xerxes perplexed as to why his out numbered troops were not making headway against the few Greeks now tried again to eliminate the threat along the pass thinking that due to t he small size of the remaining Greek troops they were most likely injured and their superior warriors were injured or already dead ...

Meeting the Ancient Gods

... hotel now - The Divani Hotel - and I am going to try to upload some photos. If I can't do it from here there is an internet cafe in town and EB and I will go and try to add some tomorrow.... We are having a great time and are amazed at the similarities in climate and landscape to Arizona. A lot of the same kinds of trees and flowers as well. The three single ladies - Annie, EB & I - have not met a greek God yet.....but we aren't giving up on it.

A Meteroa-ic Side Trip

We just got back from a two day side trip that we decided to do after talking to one of the girls staying here at the hostel. It was a trip up to Delphi to visit the ancient sanctuary and Temple of Apollo (an archaeological site), then the Apollo Museum where they had some amazing relics, statues & treasures from as far back as the 6th century BC. It was really good, there just ...

Journey to the Center of the World

... into mountain living. It was a great day for hiking, but getting hot in the blazing sun. I must say I find the sun in Greece to be very powerful; recently I have followed the Asian ways and used an umbrella. Overall the day went smoothly and if forgetting my camera battery is the worst thing that happens to me while traveling, I'm in for one great holiday. Tomorrow morning I say farewell to the main land, as my next stop is the Cycladic Islands, Mykonos actually.

... next bus to Delphi left and Delphi at 4 o'clock this afternoon. On the way we stopped for ten minutes just beside the Corinth Canal, so G got to see it up close like he'd wanted. It's a rather impressive piece of work. And to think it took over two thousand years to get it done! It's beautiful up here, in the mountains. Our balcony overlooks a deep valley and we can see the Gulf of Corinth in the distance. Tomorrow, we visit the Oracle. What should I ask her?
