Fietsen in Sukhotai

Sawat di Kha(b)! Onze tocht richting Sukothai is vlot verlopen.

Another ancient city

This week has involved alot of temple visiting so apologies if these blogs seem a little brief! On leaving Ayutthaya, whilst waiting for the Bus after squeezing for people and 4 rucksacs into the back of a Tuc Tuc, i was given a quick thai message at the bus station by my legendary guesthouse hosts which i think should be a service imported to the tube. The journey was just less than 6 hours long and i was glad to say that it flew by, because there will be worse to come, for instance, 2 days ...

Bus and Sangtheaw

It all happened so quickly. We got to New Sukhothai bus station, and tried to work out how to get to Old sukhothai, only to end up back on the same bus that kindly dropped us off opposite Vitoon Guest House (the chilean had booked a room there). The lady that run the house was very informative, after checking in, explored the market, ate in a restaurant run by an english guy's wife, then headed for the free light and sound show - be it a bit late. the temples looked amazing in the night with ...

The Ruins of Siam

The ride to Sukhothai was easy, I slept, as I always do on overnight rides. I'm blessed that I can sleep anywhere.

Arrival was interesting. It was 4:30am and by the time I got off the bus there was one Tuk Tuk left. Actually it was a Songtheaw which is kind of like a little motorized gazebo looking thing. The driver was....physically and mentally disabled which concerned me at first but he pulled out laminated maps that showed the distance to my guesthouse, he had an official looking j...

The Struggle of getting to Sukothai

... and after 30 minutes it finally arrived but not at Sukothai at the regional bus station. Apparently I had to catch a regional bus to Sukothai, but when I tried to buy a ticket the next bus to Sukothai was sold out. I then tried to buy a ticket for the bus after that but vendor would not sell them until thirty minutes before the bus left. So I sat around for half an hour waiting to buy a ticket then ...

Sukhothai - more temples

... we thought we had booked. Surprisingly, however, the bus came, we recognised the name and started our six hour trip. The journey itself, through the wide wet lands with glimpses of mountains in the far distance, lacked memorable features (particularly for Tony who put on his iPod and slept through most of it).

Helpfully, the bus terminal in Sukothai is actually a proper and obvious terminal. Less helpfully it is nowhere near Sukothai, either the old or new ...

Boon Lott's Elephant Sanctuary

... nature and getting up close and personal with Thai elephants, will love a visit to BLES. I learned about BLES from two independent sources. A friend of mine, MaryLou Hecht had visited last year, and since then has been crafting the professional and interesting website and newsletters you will find at www.blesele.org. I had also heard stories from the mahouts at the Thai Elephant Conservation Center (TECC) about the amazing young English woman, Katherine Connor, who lived at ...

Temple, Temple, Temple, Temple,...oh look a Temple

... but we never made it that far. it was an extremely small passage you had to go into in the wall and i wasnt doing it. Jessie offer to help guy that was running back and forth trying to take pictures of himself and he politely declined. Later he asked her to take a couple of pictures ( I guess he got tired of running back and forth). Jessie immediately ordered him to remove the silly biking helmet he had on then his glasses. She quickly had him posing and smiling. He ...

Buddhas, and lots of 'em

... Poos! We ate at the night market last night and we'll go back there again this evening. It was very interesting seeing the Thais turning up to eat at the night market armed with their bottles of booze, whiskey mostly, they even bring their own soda, and the restaurant provides the ice! I don't know if they charge for the ice, or, if you eat there it's free but I can see now why all the eateries in Bangkok were so ...

Sukhothai & Chiang Mai

... one site (+ 10B for the bike) or 350B for all five sites. I opted for only the main, central zone. The best way to see the ruins is on bike. I covered a lot of ground and saw each temple from all sides. There was a lot of space to cover. As I got there early, I finished early. I was back at the guesthouse just after noon, so I checked out and went to catch the 1pm bus to Chiang Mai. This is when I found out that I can walk to the bus station ...
