... amounts of cows walking and ******** peacefully. In line with what one expects to find in a city in Rajasthan. With respect to the snakes, I have to admit cobras show quite a poor look, and may be the first time they impress and one wants to keep a cautious distance, but the second time, you just don't care any more, even if they sit behind yours in a crammed local bus or they are just a feed away as you turn to walk away after buying a couple of papayas.<br>

Nail painting!

... br>We set off for Bikaner after our little shopping spree and Sanjay decided to tell us a bit about India. Apparently there are 300 states in India and each one has its own language, although the most commonly used and understood language is Hindi, and the most common religion is Hinduism, but Buddhism and Sikhism feature a lot as well. Sanjay also told us that marriages are quite often still arranged by the parents by the time the bride and groom are in their early ...

Rats its Bikaner

... cute, put it this way they weren'g greasy slimy sewer rats, but little fat brown rats who due to their high status were able to gorge on milk and rice to their hearts content. Apparently we had arrived after the main feeding as we could see floor space, normally the floor looks like its moving due to the quantities of the pesky little fellows. The rats are considered to be the reincarnation of followers of the Hindu goddess ...

... on the way in we noticed a sign saying a guide is included free and to avoid encouraging the touts. We started with a delicious lunch in the on-site cafe - Alu Jeera, Vegetable Biriany and Mushroom Mutter. When we saw that the large group of people waiting to go on the next tour of the Fort was all Indian we decide to pay a small extra fee to share an audio guide between us. We knew that we would only spoil their tour as they wouldn't be able to ...

... in-temples rule just because there are hundreds of rats running around!) we were surprised to find that actually, there weren't as many rats as we were expecting. From descriptions other people had given we'd expected seething heaps of furry critters covering every available space. In fact the main open spaces of the temple were rat-free - the rats instead (and fairly sensibly in the stupid heat of the area) bounced around in the shady corners and inside, drinking from the ...

... a couple of buses on a long day's travelling down to the plains to Amritsar. In the sikh Punjab state, Amritsar is home to the Sikh's holy Golden Temple. From the centre of the Buddhist world to the centre of the Sikh within 10 hours! The city was pretty horrendous. The pollution had me quite literally choking, and the streets were beyond hectic. Nowhere near as touristy as other places we've visited it was harder work to travel about as ...

City of Bikaner

... his son play music and perform Rajasthan dances; and we also had another man perform a puppet show. It was a little strange as we were the only ones dining at that time. On Wednesday (11/22), we visited the Junagarh Fort. The fort was constructed between 1588 and 1593 by Raja Rai Singh. This is where the rulers/maharajas had lived back in the day. We felt the fort was one of the better preserved (or restored) forts ...

... fromt he city and the full moon made it hard to see the stars. They were a little washed out. But still, it was fun to be out in the open desert. We saw lots of wild antelope in the desrt and a white fox that looked more gray than white. This internet connection is slow, so I won't upload images here either. I also have people waiting for me to finish here so I'll wait until I get back to Udaipur before I upload images.
