The Places Between, India Blog 22, September 26th
This entry serves mostly as a place holder to show that I didn’t go straight from Chidambaram to Kodaikanal. However, there are some things I want to talk about here that might seem out of place in the other entry.
In India, people always ask what department you're from. From students to rickshaw drivers, parents to peddlers, there is something sacred about a person's studies. It is equivalent to asking "What do you plan on devoting your life to."
Beyond that, it's an easy way of attaining some form of definition. This is Bob the Builder. That's Joe the scientist. Ricky the Banker. Fred the Teacher. Everybody's got a label.
